AMO is the leading source for U.S. Coast Guard licensed Merchant Marine officers - all departments, all trades.

关于我们

American Maritime Officers is the largest union of U.S. merchant marine officers. AMO officers work aboard U.S.-flagged merchant and military sealift vessels. AMO officers work in a broad range of domestic and international trades aboard U.S.-flagged vessels in the deep-sea sector, including oil and product tankers, containerships, roll-on/roll-off ships, heavy-lift ships, trailerships, general cargo vessels, LNG carriers and the only U.S.-owned fleet of undersea cable installation and repair ships. AMO officers also work aboard Military Sealift Command’s large, medium-speed roll-on/roll-off ships, and aboard military prepositioning vessels, fast sealift ships, product tankers, Ready Reserve Force ships and several others operated by private-sector ship managers for Military Sealift Command and the Maritime Administration. AMO has pioneered new job opportunities for American officers aboard international liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers. AMO officers have access to the only LNG training program in the U.S. certified to the standards of the Society of International Gas Tanker and Terminal Operators at the AMO Safety & Education Plan’s STAR Center. AMO officers also have access to a comprehensive dynamic positioning (DP) training program accredited by the Nautical Institute at STAR Center. AMO represents the officers and stewards in the majority of the U.S. Great Lakes fleets. AMO also has collective bargaining agreements covering scores of ocean-going and harbor tugs and inland waters vessels. AMO members and their families draw employer-paid benefits from the AMO Medical, Vacation, Pension and Defined Contribution Plans, the Pension Plan Money Purchase Benefit, and from individual accounts through the AMO 401(k) Plan. The AMO Safety & Education Plan has conceived the most advanced and comprehensive training, license upgrading and STCW certification programs among U.S. maritime training

  • New Work for AMO on Heavy-Lift Ship Allied Brooklyn American Maritime Officers organized the officers, and over the weekend, signed an agreement for the heavy-lift ship M/V Allied Brooklyn. AMO had received pledge cards from the ship's officers and was able to finalize the terms for a five-year agreement with Federated Crewing on January 17. The Allied Brooklyn operates in international trade and is expected to participate in short- and long-term government charters. Federated acquired and reflagged the Allied Brooklyn into U.S. registry in 2024. Construction of the ship was completed in 2012. "I am very pleased we have signed with Federated - a new company to AMO - providing new work for our membership," said AMO National President Willie Barrere. "Our contracts team did an excellent job and we look forward to working with the company on the Allied Brooklyn, and on new opportunities for our members."

Stena Polaris Completes Festive First MSC CONSOL with French Navy On Christmas Eve, the commercial tanker Stena Polaris moored at Toulon Naval Base, France, and successfully completed in-port refueling training with the French supply vessel Jacques Chevallier, demonstrating the value of being able to refuel vessels belonging to allies and partners. Stena Polaris then performed a CONSOL underway replenishment with Jacques Chevallier, demonstrating a new capability for the French Navy and increased capacity among allied nations. The Stena Polaris is operated by Crowley and is manned in all licensed positions by members of American Maritime Officers. "History has shown us time and again that allied success on the battlefield depends upon the strength of the industrial base and our relationships with the commercial sector," said Army Lt. Gen. Jered Helwig, USTRANSCOM deputy commander. "Our close relationships with the fuels industry and our allies have been and continue to be integral to safeguarding national interests at home and abroad." During the CONSOL operation, JP5 fuel was transferred between the two vessels, demonstrating another option to the standard fuel delivery process. Typically, a commercial vessel transfers fuel to Military Sealift Command’s Combat Logistics Fleet, which then supports deployed units, such as a carrier strike group. MSC reintroduced commercial tankers to fuel transfers in 2015 to reduce port visits

  • AMO Officers Onboard as USS Simanek Enters Service Members of American Maritime Officers are operating the U.S. Navy's newest Expeditionary Sea Base, the USS Robert E. Simanek (ESB 7), manning all licensed positions under an agreement between Ocean Ships Inc. and Military Sealift Command. The USS Simanek was delivered to the Navy in September. The ship is named for Private First Class Robert Ernest Simanek, who was awarded the Medal of Honor for shielding fellow Marines from a grenade at the Battle of Bunker Hill during the Korean War. The Medal of Honor was presented to him by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in a White House ceremony in 1953. "From christening in May 2024 to delivery, it has been an exciting time for those who spend each day preparing this ship to support our fleet," said Tim Roberts, Strategic and Theater Sealift program manager, Program Executive Office (PEO) Ships. "The ESB ship class is a highly flexible platform used across various military operations. ESB ships are mobile sea-based assets and are a part of the critical access infrastructure that supports the deployment of forces, equipment, supplies, and warfighting capability." ESBs are optimized to support a variety of maritime based missions, including Special Operations, Airborne Mine Counter Measures, Crisis Response Force Sea Basing, Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance and Unmanned Aviation Systems. The ESBs - which include a four spot V-22 sized flight deck, mission deck and hangar - are designed around four core capabilities: aviation facilities, berthing, equipment staging support, and command and control assets. A follow-on ship, USS Hector A. Cafferata Jr. (ESB 8), is under construction at NASSCO. AMO represents all licensed officers aboard both the John Glenn and Montford Point, the two original ships in the class built in 2012. The previous four ESBs are manned by a combination of military and civilian mariners, but as MSC recently revealed plans to lay up 17 vessels to address its manning shortage, the USS Simanek will be manned in all licensed positions for the foreseeable future by AMO officers. "American Maritime Officers is proud to work with our partner, Ocean Ships, on this important assignment. Our officers are well trained and suited to carry out this task," said AMO National President Willie Barrere. "We look forward to continuing our relationship and assistance with Military Sealift Command and the U.S. Navy in the future."
