Long before the modern fight for trans rights, Lucy Hicks Anderson insisted on living as her true self. Born in 1886, she asserted her identity as a girl from a young age—something her parents and doctors affirmed, an extraordinary act of recognition at the time. As an adult, she became a celebrated socialite, chef, and entrepreneur in Oxnard, California, running a successful boarding house and hosting some of the city’s most prestigious events. But in 1945, Lucy’s identity was scrutinized when authorities discovered she was trans. The U.S. government charged her with fraud for receiving spousal benefits as a woman married to a man. At her trial, she boldly declared: "I have lived, dressed, acted just what I am, a woman.†Despite her unwavering defense, she was convicted and imprisoned in a men’s facility—a painful reality that echoes in the struggles trans people still face today. Lucy Hicks Anderson’s story is one of resilience, defiance, and the ongoing fight for trans autonomy. This Trans Week of Visibility & Action, we honor her legacy—not just by remembering her name, but by continuing the struggle for justice, dignity, and the right to live authentically. ?? For decades, LGBTQ+ athletes had to hide who they were to stay in the game. That began to change when Mark Chambers founded Lambda Basketball in 1990, creating a space where gay athletes could compete openly. In 2002, he took it even further, launching the National Gay Basketball Association (NGBA)—a game-changer for LGBTQ+ inclusion in sports. ??? In our latest newsletter, Mike Brown—audio storyteller, artist, educator, and thought leader—dives into Chambers’ journey from isolation to inspiration and the legacy he built for generations of LGBTQ+ athletes. ??
