Today, Kevin Dempsey AISI President and CEO addressed the OECD - OCDE Global Forum on Steel Excess Capacity (GFSEC). Dempsey highlighted the need for more robust data to inform policy on the trade impact of global steel industry emissions, including not only on trade flows between countries but also on the country where steel is melted and poured – which is the source of the largest amount of emissions. Dempsey emphasized concerns about circumvention, evasion and transshipment of steel through third countries and indicated that not all countries are making steel trade data publicly available. Dempsey reiterated the leadership of the American steel industry in clean steel production and transparency on critical data on steel trade, production and emissions.

When it comes to the green transition, we are the undisputed global leader in sustainable stainless steel. The commercial sector is only one piece of the puzzle. Additionally, we need ambitious policies to promote the green transition and to create a stable demand for domestically made low-emission products. Good coordination between partners is making this journey easier. As a European living in America, I understand the opportunities and challenges that are inherent to international collaboration. In the meantime, we're showing that hard-to-abate industries,?which we are often told "can't change," are able to pivot to becoming forerunners in sustainability in our fields. And at the same time we are able to support our domestic customers with the best stainless steel made in America! It was a pleasure to participate in the OECD Steel Committee meetings this week with the U.S. government, industry, and labor delegation. The steel crisis is worsening; global excess capacity is rising strongly, steel prices have been falling, exports of unfairly traded steel and steel-intensive products, including from sources of excess capacity, are flooding international markets, and trade actions are escalating. The attached Statement by our Chair Ulf Zumkley is the strongest yet and reflects a growing acknowledgement by many countries on the need to address non-market policies and practices that threaten the viability of steel and other industries in market-oriented economies.
