AIS held our first in-person CEU event last November 1-2 and was a great success! For two days, we explored holistic stuttering therapy for pre-schoolers, school-aged children, and adults. One attendee said, "This was by far the most informative and helpful CEU workshop I have taken in 30 years." We thank our board member Eric Dinallo for allowing us to gather in his beautiful office space at Debevoise and Plimpton in Hudson Yards. AIS celebrated our 18th annual gala on September 16, 2024, with the theme "I'm Excellent, and I Stutter." A fashionable group of celebrities, clients, and donors came together to support the AIS mission: providing universally affordable, state-of-the-art speech therapy to people who stutter, and improving professional and public understanding of stuttering. The evening honored Will Blodgett with the Freeing Voices, Changing Lives Award, and featured speeches from NY Giant Joshua Ezeudu, MMA fighter Curtis Blaydes, singer-songwriter Amanda Mammana, AIS director Heather Grossman, 16-year-old AIS client Jimmy, and board members Eric Dinallo and Emily Blunt. Can you stutter in the US Armed Forces? ????? Many people who stutter serve successfully in the armed forces. In this article, we answer some frequently asked questions about stuttering in the US Military and talk to a client about his service in the Air Force. People who have served in the US Armed Forces report that the challenges they faced there because of their stuttering are similar to the challenges faced by any person who stutters in any line of work. The wide variety of experiences and assignments available makes it possible for each person to find the level of challenge that is right for them. And, the National Stuttering Association has military support groups and a brochure you can use to educate recruiters, colleagues, and supervisors. Troy McGill, PT, PhD, Dip MDT, SCS, is a Board-Certified Sports Clinical Specialist and the Director of Therapy/Health Management Services at Alaska Regional Hospital.
