Did you know that zoos have extensive emergency plans to keep animals safe during extreme weather? At the Humane Certified? Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium, staff are prepared for storms, snow, and even rare tornadoes, moving animals like giraffes—who are vulnerable to lightning—into safe enclosures. The zoo runs regular drills, from real-time animal relocations to tabletop exercises that simulate crisis scenarios. This proactive approach ensures that every animal, from tigers to orangutans, has a safe place during unexpected weather. Pittsburgh Zoo also collaborates with zoos across the country, stepping in to help facilities hit by hurricanes and relying on others if needed. This teamwork shows how the zoo community protects animal welfare, no matter what Mother Nature brings.

This Veteran’s Day, we want to thank our brave heroes who have served our country on and off the battlefield. With support from Coleman All Natural Meats, more than 100 of our service men and women have received lifesaving support from a service dog through American Humane’s Pups4Patriots program. These pups, looking for a forever home, have found their own life of service in support of veterans with unseen injuries of war. Together, we’re saving lives on both ends of the leash. https://bit.ly/48IuUVu
