Did you know that balance disorders affect millions of people globally? During Balance Awareness Week, we’re highlighting conditions such as Meniere's disease, vestibular neuritis, and benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), and exploring their impact on daily life. At the American Hearing Research Foundation, we're committed to educating and empowering those affected by these disorders. Join us in raising awareness and supporting those who navigate the challenges of balance disorders every day! As we recognize National Suicide Prevention Month, it's crucial to acknowledge the link between untreated hearing loss and depression, which can lead to social isolation and mental health challenges. Early intervention and the use of hearing aids can significantly improve well-being. If you or someone you know is affected, take action today. Learn more about the connection between hearing loss and depression here: https://lnkd.in/eRFJr6kb. A child with hearing loss can miss out on instruction, language development, and social skills. The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) notes communication difficulties often lead to social isolation and poor self-esteem. It can make a difference to begin early with Intervention services. #AcademicAchievement #hearingloss #languagedevelopment

What does hearing loss look like in children? * Toddlers may not startle at loud noises, or they may not react to voices or sounds from another room. * Older children might: - not respond when called - have a dip in grades - complain of ringing in the ears - talk too loudly - watch TV with the volume turned up too high - pronounce words incorrectly - appear inattentive and prone to daydreaming If you have any doubt about your child's hearing, have them tested. Check with your pediatrician, an audiologist, or an ear/nose/throat doctor. #hearingloss #hearinghealth #childhearingloss

Back to school time - will your child be screened for hearing loss? As of 2018, 75% of states, including Washington, DC, require hearing screenings for school-age children. However, the frequency of screening varies by state. For example, only Washington, DC requires annual hearing screenings. Of the states that do require screenings, 28 mandate grades for screening, but only 20 require screening beyond 6th grade. Screenings can be offered directly at schools or by requiring parents to obtain screenings from a child's healthcare provider. #HearingScreening #BackToSchool #learning
