VISION: To be the foremost champion of geography for the benefit of society.

关于我们

Established in 1851, the American Geographical Society (AGS) is the oldest professional geographical organization in the United States. It is recognized world-wide as a pioneer in geographical research and education in Geography for over 170 years. The mission of AGS is to advance geographic knowledge and the recognition of its importance in the contemporary world. AGS promotes the use of geography in business, government, science, and education with a goal to enhance the nation’s geographic literacy so as to engender sound public policy, national security, and human well-being worldwide. AGS is the only organization focused on bringing together academics, business people, those who influence public policy (including leaders in local, state and federal government, not-for-profit organizations and the media), and the general public for the express purpose of furthering the understanding of the role of geography in our lives. AGS provides leadership to frame the national discussion of the growing importance of geography and geo-spatial tools. The Society maintains its headquarters in New York, New York.

When you see a map, what’s the first thing you think of? Geography? Data points? What if a map could reveal something deeper … like empathy? #NatGeoExplorer Clinton G. Johnson is redefining how we experience geography through?the Empathy Atlas — a project that bridges historical narratives and geospatial technology to engage people with Black migration histories. Traveling throughout the U.S., Clinton is on a journey to listen to stories from Black communities, including those of descendants of Frederick Douglas and living relatives of Harriet Tubman. He will bring these stories and experiences to life through interactive maps that will help us better understand our world. Explore the full story: https://lnkd.in/ejUC8bd2 Photo by Kris Graves

During Black History Month, it is important to share and celebrate the anthology of Black Geographers that American Geographical Society Councilor, Dr. Dee Jordan, assembled and that the AGS maintains. https://lnkd.in/eqY333Cv There are many research pioneers and leaders in this list. Geography's history is not diverse. As a discipline it was mostly male and white for much of the 20th century. That is changing but there is room for improvement so that more students from different ethnic, racial and class backgrounds are exposed to geographical thinking and geospatial skills. This is why the American Geographical society works with students through Teen Maptivists https://lnkd.in/em4zf5XV, and with educators in high schools and universities to change the face of geography. Another AGS Councilor, Clinton G. Johnson, is the founder of NorthStar of GIS https://lnkd.in/eMwTTbZt a wonderful organization that connects black professionals in geospatial industries.

  • This month, AGS Scholar-Intern Dorothy Janick spoke with Brian Goldin, CEO of Voyager Search, an innovative, spatially enabled search engine and data registry that allows users to maximize value from their data assets. Under Goldin’s leadership, the company has grown into a robust information retrieval system that is uniquely positioned to address the complexities of data management in today’s rapidly evolving technological landscape. As Voyager looks to the future, the company is working to further develop its search technology using tools like artificial intelligence and metadata tracking. Reflecting on his decades-long career in geospatial data, Goldin shared some advice for young geographers who are inspired by his path. He encouraged aspiring geographers to develop data literacy, noting, “It’s really all about data and how to understand it. You don’t have to be a data scientist, but you should ask questions, doubt things, do research, learn some skills so you can play with data.” At the same time, he added, it’s important to develop soft skills, like interpersonal communication and relationship building, that help you present information to others. Perhaps most importantly, he reflected, it’s important that you find something to be excited about: “Be passionate about something. Otherwise, it’s just work. Find something you really want to do and that doesn’t feel like work.” Read more here: https://lnkd.in/gx_kmA5V #GIS #Geospatial #Geography #Mapping #Geotech #DataScience

  • Check out our latest FOCUS on Geography piece and submit your own piece to our peer-reviewed digital publication! The newest piece is: "Everything comes from something: A geographic photo analysis of sand extraction and usage in Rwanda’s rapidly growing economy" by Mette Bendixen at McGill University! With more than 13 million people,?Rwanda?has the second largest population density in Sub-Saharan Africa, putting enormous pressure on the country’s resources, its land usage, and management. Since the 1994 genocide, the country has implemented strategies to rehabilitate and stabilize the economy, resulting in overall socio-economic progress; the country has one of the fastest growing economies in Africa, with an average GDP growth rate of more than 7% and life expectancy improving by more than 33% since 2000. Rwanda is now striving to become one of the fastest growing economies in Africa, and with its Vision 2050 plan, the country aims to transition into a high-income country within the next 25 years. A key component of this strategy is to develop urban areas, which by 2050 are expected to house 70% of the population. Materials as pedestrian as sand, gravel, and crushed stones are a key to that, but also among the most underappreciated resources on the planet. Collectively referred to as ‘aggregates’, they are important construction materials, including concrete, asphalt and glass. Extracting these materials in low- and middle-income countries is often done through manual labor using simple tools like shovels and plastic jerrycans. Throughout the entire Sub-Saharan continent, increasing demand for these resources, due to rapid population growth and urbanization, means that aggregates are often extracted without regulations, using unsustainable methods. With an annual population growth of more than 2% and the ambitious aims to modernize the country, Rwanda’s limited resources are experiencing enormous pressure. Using Rwanda as an example, this photo essay documents the central place of these materials within the development plan and reveal a critical disjunction: extraction activities offer a livelihood for low-income people and provide some necessary materials for them, but the main effort is to create high-end housing and more formal housing in the countries’ richest areas. Read it here: https://lnkd.in/giMPEmkv Digital FOCUS on Geography is open to article ideas and manuscripts from geographers and those who write geographically. Articles must be excellent in quality, richly illustrated, and written for an informed general audience interested in geographic research and exploration. • February is Black History Month and AGS is proud to recognize and celebrate Black geographers who have contributed so much to the geographical and geospatial disciplines!?You can learn more about this rich history in the?Celebrating Black Geographers Anthology,?conceived, compiled, and edited by AGS Councilor Dr. Dee?Jordan.?The project represents three cohorts spanning 1900-2000, 2001-2010, and 2011-2020. The anthology was inspired by the report titled?"Black Geographers in Institutions of Higher Education in the United States: Where They Are and a Selected Bibliography of Their Works", published in 2003 by Joe T. Darden and Lucia Terra. This anthology of Black Geographers is an expansion of the previous report, born out of the necessity to have a publicly available single source database that chronicles the contributions of Black Geographers to the discipline of Geography. This collection includes photographs, biographies, and interesting facts. Go to the Anthology here: https://lnkd.in/gt8S5sEe Use this form to submit information about persons who should be included in the Celebrating Black Geographers anthology: https://lnkd.in/dVqgF5n #BlackHistoryMonth #MelanatedAndMapping #BlackHistory #Geography #BlackGeographers #BlackGeographies #GIS #Geospatial #Geoscience
