Expanding possibilities for people with vision loss

关于我们

Our Mission: The American Foundation for the Blind creates equal opportunities and expands possibilities through advocacy, thought leadership, and strategic partnerships. Who We Are: Since 1921, AFB has been a leader in expanding possibilities for the nearly 25 million Americans living with vision loss. A national nonprofit with offices in five U.S. cities, we champion access and equality and stand at the forefront of new technologies and evidence-based advocacy. We address the most pressing needs of people with vision loss and their families, breaking down societal barriers and promoting broad systemic change. Like Helen Keller, AFB's most famous ambassador, we are committed to creating a more equitable world for people with disabilities. Our Action Plan: AFB cultivates in-depth knowledge that improves understanding of issues affecting children and adults who are blind or visually impaired, to facilitate meaningful change that fosters equality and inclusion.

  • Happy #WomensHistoryMonth! On this day in 1887, Helen Keller met Anne Sullivan, the teacher who transformed her life. At just 20 years old, Anne, a graduate of Perkins School for the Blind, arrived in Tuscumbia to teach Helen, who was deaf and blind. Anne had endured a difficult childhood, struggling with her own severe vision problems and spending years as a ward of the state in Tewksbury Almshouse, an overcrowded home for the destitute, under brutal conditions. Through patience and perseverance, Anne taught Helen language by manually signing into her hand—beginning with the word “doll.” This breakthrough led to one of history’s most remarkable teacher-student relationships and a lifelong friendship, later immortalized in The Miracle Worker. I am filled with wonder when I consider the immeasurable contract between the two lives which it connects. Helen Keller. • As we age, technology can turn from a bridge into a barrier for people with hearing loss, vision loss, and other disabilities. The Communications, Video, and Technology Accessibility (CVTA) Act would ensure that digital services like telehealth and streaming television remain accessible to everyone, allowing older adults to stay connected, informed, and self-sufficient.
