When Janine's adopted daughter Samona unexpectedly took her life, she couldn't help but feel at fault. Janine first started noticing Mona's depression symptoms in high school. "What’s so crazy is how glorious she was to us. She couldn’t see herself through our eyes. That’s the tragedy of depression." Three months after Mona's passing, Janine found support at her first Out of the Darkness Walk, leading her down a path of healing and resilience. Read Janine's story: https://lnkd.in/e8MNncY

Many don’t realize that how employers respond to a suicide death may increase or decrease safety for others in the workplace. That's why, as an employer, crisis response and postvention is critical. Postvention refers to interventions that help people cope with the emotional distress resulting from a death by suicide and prevent additional trauma. Safely initiate postvention efforts with these five crucial steps. For more information visit https://lnkd.in/e6FACtEj

This is your reminder that two things can be true at once. After losing a loved one to suicide, it’s critical to give yourself grace. You may think “I’m not allowed to experience any joy or happiness during this time” and “I can only be sad.” But, it’s okay to experience seemingly opposing feelings of growth and grief at once. It’s human nature to feel more than one emotion at a time. So, while your grieving journey may feel daunting and unfamiliar, keep in mind that there is no right or wrong way to grieve. And, remember, growth and grief can coexist. Learn more about Yossi's experience as a researcher and journey as a loss survivor: https://lnkd.in/eNdjuW7z

Every story we tell shapes how others see mental health and suicide. For those who report on suicide, make sure to do so with compassion and empathy, avoid graphic details, and always share resources like the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. Recovery is possible, and help is always available. ?? Visit afsp.org/safereporting to learn more.
