Delivering meaningful conservation impact through the empowerment of family forest landowners.
关于我们
The American Forest Foundation (AFF) is a national conservation organization that works to deliver clean water, wildlife habitat, carbon sequestration and storage, and sustainable wood supplies to those that value it, by empowering family forest owners to care for their land. AFF is the only conservation group working on a national level across a wide range of partners to empower family forest owners to cultivate conservation impact in their forests, and to ensure that impact is valued, paid for and supported. We develop strategies, solutions and partnerships to that help landowners overcome the challenges they face to creating well-managed forests. The American Forest Foundation oversees the American Tree Farm System, the Family Forest Carbon Program, My Sierra Woods and many other programs.

Landowners often fear that enrolling in a carbon project might limit the way they use their land, but Monica Shields is proof that a property enrolled in the Family Forest Carbon Program can be just as versatile as any other. Monica has managed to be a proud member of FFCP while raising animals, running a small business, managing deer populations, increasing biodiversity, and operating a community-based instruction site.? I had the privilege of representing the great work of the American Forest Foundation's Family Forest Carbon Program and Fields & Forests Program at last week's Georgia Cattleman's Association Annual Convention. The key takeaway from my time at the convention was: Options! Landowners want to know what options exist to diversify their incomes, keep land in their families, and continue to earn money from their property. Industry partners and NGOs want to know what alternative land management strategies they can share with their clients. Our programs can stand alone or complement other opportunities that landowners are pursuing. Enrollment in AFF's programs can be a piece of the puzzle in meeting a landowner's land management objectives.

As of 2018, only 11% of U.S. family forest owners had access to a professional forester or management plan.? The Family Forest Carbon Program is working to make forestry and technical assistance accessible for 100% of these landowners.? Last week, buyers and investors participated in the first-ever American Forest Foundation Carbon Auction. To everyone who joined us during auction week and everyone who followed along, we want to thank you for being part of this pivotal event! The voluntary carbon market is still evolving, and we at AFF know we need to be part of the effort to bring it to scale—from the way we enroll landowners and design high integrity credits, to the way credits are bought and sold. The AFF auction was exactly this—our chance to test new approaches to buying and selling carbon credits, and to share our learnings with all stakeholders who participate in the voluntary carbon market. Here is what we’ve learned and what’s next: ● Buyers are interested in and already purchasing credits through prepayment contracts. This gives us a huge leg up in providing upfront investment in family forests that need support to care for the health and productivity of their lands now. ● The auction format did not meet buyers’ procurement needs and timelines. Over the course of the auction, buyers reached out to discuss and pursue bilateral agreements for the available Family Forest Carbon Program credits instead of bidding directly through the auction. ● The Data Room shortened and simplified the due diligence process of purchasing carbon credits – a historically massive barrier for corporations to participate in the market. This platform of sharing information through the Data Room will continue to be a resource available to interested buyers beyond the auction. AFF is continuing to work with buyers and other project developers to find new ways to streamline and improve the way we buy and sell carbon credits. From purchasing through prepayment contracts to developing new ways to scale this market, we hope you join us in this effort.? To all of those who contributed to this effort, thank you for being part of the work that will help strengthen and scale this market to maximize our impact on nature.? “Whenever buyers raise the concern [of community benefits], I always say that’s something that you can control by making prepayments,” shares AFF’s Nathan Truitt. “You will see a lot more of the credit price flow through to communities if projects don’t have to pay that cost of that capital.” Read how upfront financing is one of 5 new strategies that can make forest carbon projects more sustainable and impactful in Ecosystem Marketplace: https://lnkd.in/e-8ZApEx #CarbonFinance #VoluntaryCarbonMarket #CarbonCredits #ForestCarbonProjects #NatureBasedSolutions
