Western North Carolina local leaders came together to form the #WNCPartnership to help drive resilience and recovery after Hurricane Helene. We're proud to support this work and committed to streamlining recovery, ensuring this region's voice is heard long after the Helene headlines have faded. https://bit.ly/4i5qufh Mayor Aaron Haynie of Marshall, NC on how these communities have come together during this time:

Big win! AFC has long called for a comprehensive and coordinated federal strategy to address resilience. Today President Trump has done just that by ordering the National Security Council to establish a National Resilience Strategy. The Strategy aims to protect lives and livelihoods while saving taxpayer dollars by: ?? Simplifying federal program complexity ?? Empowering states and communities ?? Prioritizing smarter, data-driven infrastructure investments National Security Advisor Waltz is the right leader for this important effort. Through his distinguished military service and as a former U.S. Representative and AFC Federal Champion, he has advanced proactive strategies to defend U.S. national security and ensure local leaders and communities are better prepared for growing flood risk.? Today’s order reflects broad, bipartisan support to help all levels of government work together to increase resilience to stronger storms and more frequent flooding. AFC looks forward to working with President Trump, National Security Advisor Waltz, and leaders across government to deliver a safer, more resilient future. Our Founder/Executive Director Melissa Roberts on the recent wildfires impacting the Carolinas, just as many communities are still reeling from the aftermath of Hurricane Helene:
This weekend, devastating wildfires have spread across the Carolinas, prompting a State of Emergency in South Carolina, and burning hundreds of acres in North Carolina. These fires are impacting regions that are still grappling with the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, which caused heavy rainfall and flooding last fall - leaving many communities still struggling to recover. Some areas that were hit hardest by Helene, like Western North Carolina and Pickens County, SC, are now facing the added impacts of yet another disaster, further complicating rebuilding efforts. This serves as another example of how disasters are becoming more intense and increasingly overlapping—creating new challenges just as communities are picking up the pieces from the last tragedy. With the growing frequency of these events, it’s more important than ever that we rethink resilience policy to tackle not just individual tragedies, but the cumulative impact of overlapping disasters. That’s why American Flood Coalition is working towards a new approach to adaptation policy that ensures communities are better prepared in the face of future challenges. https://lnkd.in/eqWjvQbq

Accurate and timely data = robust and scalable solutions. ?? That's why AFC has been working with on-the-ground partners, including the Iowa Flood Center, to measure the flood reduction benefits of multi-cropping, a pilot that began in 2020 when we partnered with FLOLO Farms/Loran Steinlage in West Union, Iowa, and Northeast Iowa Resource Conservation & Development.
How can farming impact flooding? The Iowa Flood Center is finding out by comparing hydro weather stations on regenerative and conventional farms. These stations collect real-time data on rainfall, wind, and soil moisture at multiple depths to reveal how different practices affect water retention and runoff. "We’re gathering critical data to improve forecasting and resilience," says Kate Giannini of the Iowa Flood Center. The goal? A statewide network to enhance water management across Iowa.
