Don't miss MSSE's featured article of the month ?? The loss of strength following skeletal muscle disuse is partly due to neural factors. In 'Neuromodulatory Contribution to Muscle Force Production after Short-Term Unloading and Active Recovery,' Martino and colleagues explored the neuromodulatory contribution of persistent inward currents (PICs) in force loss and recovery post-disuse. PICs were estimated from motor units' discharge activity via high-density electromyograms of the vastus lateralis muscle in 12 young males who underwent 10 days of unilateral lower-limb suspension (ULLS) and 21 days of active recovery (AR). PICs' estimates decreased by 33% post-ULLS and increased by 29% post-AR. These changes correlated (r=0.63) with a 29% reduction in maximal voluntary contraction post-ULLS and its recovery post-AR. The findings highlight the significance of central neuromodulation in force loss post-disuse and its recovery through resistance exercise, providing new insights into the neural mechanisms underlying muscle disuse and rehabilitation. The exercise profession must follow a specific pathway to establish a professional identity: 1?? The first step is requiring programmatic accreditation with a competency-based curriculum for students. 2?? The second step is providing board certification for students upon completion of an accredited program. 3?? The final step is to provide career advancement through continuing education. Following this path, like other allied health professions, will aid in establishing a professional identity and help the underutilized and recognized exercise professional become the qualified exercise professional or qualified healthcare professional. MSSE's featured article of the month ?? Peak exercise blood pressure (BP) predicts future cardiovascular events independently of resting BP. Antihypertensive medications are commonly used to control resting BP, but limited information is available regarding the influence of these medications on the BP response to exercise. In 'Chronic use of Antihypertensive Medications and Peak Exercise Blood Pressure in Adult Men and Women from the BALL ST Cohort', Idzik and colleagues report that individuals taking antihypertensive medications for >1 year are more likely to have an exaggerated exercise BP response. This effect was independent of resting BP in women but not men, highlighting the importance of examining sex differences in blood pressure control. Further, these findings suggest that exercise BP should be considered in the treatment of hypertension. Read the full text here: https://brnw.ch/21wMwLO
