The California Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) should adopt a risk-based approach to potential regulation of important disinfectant chemicals and pay heed to existing federal regulations governing them, according to comments submitted by the American Cleaning Institute (ACI). ACI provided feedback to DTSC on its Background Document on Quaternary Ammonium Compounds (QACs) in Cleaning Products and Beauty, Personal Care, and Hygiene Products. QACs are a broad class of diverse chemicals characterized as ammonium cations with various alkyl or aryl groups. They are used in a wide variety of industrial and consumer applications due to a diverse range of properties.? In the comments, ACI: ? Advises that DTSC remain mindful of the preemption by U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations on topical antiseptics ?Recommends chemical clustering, as QACs are too diverse to be regulated as a single group ?Points to sources where DTSC can seek additional data on the environmental fate and toxicology of these substances ?References safety decisions made by other regulatory authorities Read on for more details and access to our complete comments in our online newsroom: https://lnkd.in/esYfevBb #CleaningIsCaring

A new research paper co-authored by experts from ACI and AISE International Association for Soaps, Detergents and Maintenance Products, “Risk Analysis Approaches for Microbial Ingredients in Microbial-Based Cleaning Products,”?provides a step towards developing a standardized framework for risk assessment, addressing an existing gap by expanding upon well-established methodologies to increase consumer safety. The research was published in the journal Risk Analysis. Microbial-based cleaning products (MBCPs) are an innovative technology introduced in the detergents industry. This work provides MBCP manufacturers and regulators information that can be used to assist in developing their own approaches to MBCP risk assessment. “The guidance is an important step in helping microbial-based cleaning product manufacturers throughout their risk assessment and management processes,”?says study co-author James Kim, ACI Senior Vice President, Science & Regulatory Affairs. Listen in to some great insights of what went on at the #2025ACI Convention through the always in-depth The Chemical Show Podcast hosted by Victoria (King) Meyer. This is a small sampling of why global companies and smart start-ups join ACI and take part in our industry's best business-to-business meeting.
?? What happens when you gather the brightest minds in the cleaning industry under one roof in Orlando? Some fascinating shifts in how we think about innovation, sustainability, and consumer value. Victoria (King) Meyer's latest episode of The Chemical Show about key themes from American Cleaning Institute's annual meeting?unpacks some interesting insights: ? The industry's mood? Cautiously optimistic - with companies balancing market dynamics, political action, and supply chain recovery from 2024? ? Performance is non-negotiable: Whether it's supply chains or sustainable products, everything must deliver results. Water conservation is taking center stage, with companies like Croda tackling unexpected challenges (did you know synthetic clothing fibers contribute to ? of water system microplastics?)? ? The innovation landscape is evolving: Companies are racing to balance consumer desires with manufacturing capabilities while navigating regulatory timelines The most intriguing part? How AI is accelerating these transformations. From NobleAI's risk assessment tools to Southern Chemical & Textiles's water-free formulations, technology is reshaping how we approach clean.
