What is considered a good game? Let’s go with a 10-year-old co-ed soccer team. They get together once a week to practice and usually a third of the team doesn’t make it. They don’t have enough soccer balls with air, so they practice with 4 balls. They are on a grass field with no goal and only have 30 yards x 30 yards to themselves and never get to scrimmage anyone during practice. Their coach is a hard-working father that played the game in high school and knows most of the rules. Back to the game. They played a hard-fought game that ended in a 1 goal loss. The kids and coach?are happy because they had fun, scored 3 goals and made their quota for passes so?they get to go for ice cream. But wait. There’s that 1 parent... Father, to remain nameless, we’ll call him Fred, isn’t happy. His son played just as many minutes as everyone else, played half of his time in his favorite position (Center Midfield), scored the?goal that tied the game, for a short while, and is happy they get ice cream. Fred’s not happy, his son should have played center forward the whole game, should never have come off the field and has already met his caloric intake for the day at 10:30am on a Saturday.? ? Did the kids have a good game, of course they did. What do you think should be done with Fred??And why should he walk home while his kid goes for Ice Cream?

I keep seeing the most amazing gadgets and toys for training keepers and it blows my mind. While I watch these keepers do their?trained seal impersonations for an?advertisement, they have poor form, can’t catch, their feet are not planted correctly, and they are rushing themselves. The whole time a coach or trainer is encouraging them to go faster and telling them that they are doing so well. If your keeper, at any age, can’t catch a ball bounced right at them, you need to go back to basics and get rid of the gadgets and $ 200.00 gloves.? ? Coaching - Did you plan on being a coach or did you become a coach 51 years ago, American Challenge started because my father became a coach when the parent that was coaching the team didn’t come back from vacation. Parents step up every day and take on the responsibility of coaching their children's team with no idea what they are getting into. Have you thought about the parents that taught the players you have in front of you? Have you thought about the hard work and frustration a lot of mothers and fathers put in to keeping the team together? It’s an interesting idea for professional coaches to ponder the next time you scratch your head in frustration or cheer in disbelief.?

Passion I haven't played in 26 years, but the passion for the game still burns inside me. If my body would allow, I would lace up my boots, slip on my gloves (I still have both) and I would be on the field as often as possible. I still consider myself a keeper at heart. At 8, I decided to be a professional footballer and trained every day. I was always a keeper, never a field played, it’s what I was. I can’t go out and play, but I watch and I analyze as though I was on the field. That’s the passion that still burns. I have been a keeper for 54 years Oneonta - 1993
