G-NAOE 2024 organized by Europe-Korea Marine and Ocean Engineers Association (EKMOA) took place in Southampton, United Kingdom. The conference gathered 225 participants from 15 countries, fostering an inspiring and collaborative environment within the fields of naval architecture and ocean engineering. ?? The main theme entitled “Riding the Smart Wave for a Safer Ocean,” emphasized the role of innovative, environmentally friendly technologies in shaping a sustainable #maritime future. ??? Six ABS papers were presented, ranging from Applied Technology to AI and Digital Twins to Clean Energy Transition. Ezekiel Davis, ABS Vice President, Regional Business Development, Europe, delivered a keynote speech on 'Maritime Innovation' and Dr. Spyros Hirdaris CEng,FRINA,FSNAME, ABS Manager, Global Ship Systems Center, received a best paper award on ABS’ joint work on AI and Ship Systems with Aalto University (Finland), Laskaridis Shipping Co. Ltd. (Greece) and Shanghai Jiao Tong University (China). ?? The Society of Naval Architects of Korea and ABS will cohost the next G-NAOE in Houston, Texas in 2026.?

ABS hosted an informative seminar in Limassol, Cyprus, bringing together industry leaders to explore the latest trends and developments shaping the #maritime industry. ?? Ezekiel Davis, ABS Vice President, Regional Business Development, Europe, and Dhaval Mehta MBA, ABS Vice President, Regional Operations, Europe, welcomed the guests to the event. The agenda delved into the main categories that have led to port state control detentions, the most identified deficiencies, and strategies to comply with major environmental regulations with Costas Xidis, ABS Assistant Chief Surveyor, Lucia Moledo, ABS Principal Surveyor and Stela Spiraj, ABS Senior Engineer, Regulatory Affairs, providing valuable insights on these critical topics. Vasileios Gkikas, ABS Director, Business Development, Global Bulk Carriers Sector Lead, presented the recent developments of the bulk carrier segment and Christoph Rasewsky, ABS Global Container Sector Lead, addressed various topics related to the container #shipping segment, including the development of green technologies and low or #zerocarbon fuels as well as an overview of the global container shipping landscape. ??? #Nuclear technology took the spotlight at the 2024 Royal Institution of Naval Architects (RINA) President’s Invitation Lecture in London, supported by ABS. Jonathan E. Stephens, Nuclear Engineer and Manager at BWX Technologies, Inc., delivered a compelling keynote presentation titled?'Nuclear Technology for Commercial Maritime Propulsion.'?His address highlighted the transformative potential of modern nuclear technology in tackling the #maritime industry’s energy transition challenges. David Davenport-Jones, ABS Director of Business Development, presented Stephens an award recognizing his dedication and leadership in advancing nuclear innovation for maritime applications. The event also featured insightful contributions from Dr. Spyros Hirdaris CEng,FRINA,FSNAME, ABS Manager of the Global Ship Systems Center. Dr. Hirdaris shared expert perspectives, enriching the discussion on the opportunities and complexities of integrating nuclear technology into commercial #shipping. David said: “Modern nuclear technology appears to answer many of the questions posed to our industry about the energy transition. Safely harnessing this technology for shipping will require the extraordinary skill and technical expertise of RINA members.
