High standards in Preventive Medicine for the health and safety of the American people
关于我们
The American Board of Preventive Medicine (ABPM) was established in 1948 to promote the health and safety of the American people through our high standards in the certification and maintenance of certification in the profession of preventive health. The ABPM is a Member Board of the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) and a non-profit corporation; no member (officer or director) may receive any salary or compensation for services. Preventive Medicine is the specialty of medical practice that focuses on the health of individuals, communities, and defined populations. Its goal is to protect, promote, and maintain health and well-being and to prevent disease, disability, and death. Preventive medicine specialists have core competencies in biostatistics, epidemiology, environmental and occupational medicine, planning and evaluation of health services, management of healthcare organizations, research into causes of disease and injury in population groups, and the practice of prevention in clinical medicine. They apply knowledge and skills gained from the medical, social, economic, and behavioral sciences. Preventive Medicine includes the specialties of Aerospace Medicine, Occupational Medicine or Public Health and General Preventive Medicine; and the subspecialties of Addiction Medicine, Clinical Informatics, Medical Toxicology, or Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine.

In light of the recent tragic event that occurred at an unaccredited Michigan hyperbaric facility, this is an important reminder from our colleagues at the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society (UHMS) that adherence to UHMS standards is critical to the appropriate and safe use of hyperbaric therapy.
This is an update on the tragic death of 5-year-old Thomas Cooper in a hyperbaric chamber fire on January 31, 2025, in Troy, Michigan. Attorney General Dana Nessel describes the charges and those indicted in Thomas’ death. A KEY point from her interview was that essential (safety) practices were ignored. This included a failure to perform daily equipment maintenance and pre-dive patient checklists. No supervising hyperbaric physician or hyperbaric safety leader was present at the time of the accident. There was a lack of adequately credentialed hyperbaric technicians, and the hyperbaric chambers did not receive annual preventative maintenance as required. Finally, and the most egregious, was a failure to ground patients in their monoplace chambers pressurized with 100% USP medical O2. Nessel said this was an "unscrupulous business operating powerful machines beyond their manufacturer's intended term of use on children's bodies over and over again to provide unaccredited and debunked so-called treatments chiefly because it brought cash in the door..." We call on all providers of hyperbaric medicine to pause their operations and review safety standards and codes to ensure compliance - https://lnkd.in/e8d_FsdX.
