Our Mission The mission of the ABA Section of Taxation is to serve our members and the public by providing education about taxes and tax systems, and by providing leadership to support the development of an equitable, efficient and workable tax system. Our Goals - To promote diversity and inclusion in the tax profession. - To serve as the national representative of the legal profession with regard to the tax system. - To improve public understanding of, confidence in, and respect for, the tax system. - To provide leadership in simplifying and improving the tax system. - To provide unbiased, thoughtful and timely input into the legislative and administrative process. - To promote and maintain an active, vigorous, growing and interested Section membership. - To provide programs and services of unique quality which promote professionalism, competence and ethical conduct. - To provide a national forum for communication among Section members and interchange with the public sector.

I’m finally coming up for air after returning last week from the Arctic Circle, where I had the great honor (and joy!) to team up with Karen Lapekas & Kelly Phillips Erb to prepare tax returns for native villagers in Qikiqta?ruk, Tikigaq, and Kali (Kotzebue, Point Hope, and Point Lay are the English names).? This was my 3rd time venturing into the wilds for the Alaska Business Development Center’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance project, but the first time as part of a team supported by the ABA Tax Section. I am so grateful to our Chair Alice Abreu for recognizing the immense value of ABDC’s work in rural Alaska and supporting this inaugural ABA Tax Section pro bono project! Big thanks also to Meg Newman, the Tax Section's General Counsel & Susan Morgenstern for organizing and keeping the ball rolling. I cannot begin to convey how life-changing, how perspective-shifting, this work is. Yes, we work long days preparing lots of returns under what can sometimes be challenging conditions. But it’s the time spent listening to and learning from tribal elders and others who so proudly share their history, culture, customs, and way of life that will always stay with me. I am all the richer and ever grateful for it.
