The Council on International Veterinary Medical Education (CIVME) is an initiative of AAVMC that promotes and shares best practices in veterinary medical education worldwide. The CIVME Research Grant is now open and will receive applications through December 6th, 2024. Applications must represent at least three different regions to foster international collaboration. If you are an applicant and want to find collaborators or would be interested in collaborating on a CIVME grant project, use the CIVME Learning Community to reach out to other educators. To do so, please use the Project Ideas and Collaboration Requests Discussion Forum within the Funding & Publication Opportunities Tile. Today is #WorldAnimalDay! Can you identify all the animals? Need a hint (or two)? We’ve got you covered: ??Round 1: Routine vet visits and vaccines are paramount for these animals. Did you know that CDV can cross to other species and poses a potential threat to endangered wildlife? ??Round 2: A fatal prion disease known as Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) has been found in this animal. To date, there is no strong evidence that CWD infects people, but this does highlight the important role that veterinarians play in regulating our food supply. ??Round 3: Indigenous to Africa and weighing up to 1800 pounds, these animals often live in large herds as a line of defense against predators. If it’s rainy season, they might congregate by the thousands! ??Round 4: These animals may fall victim to Lead Toxicosis due to their scavenging behaviors, which leave them susceptible to a build-up of lead shot from hunters. This is a reminder that human activity can have far-reaching, unintended consequences. ??Round 5: According to the WWF, this endangered species is the most trafficked mammal in the world, with high demand for their meat and scales, which are considered both a delicacy and part of traditional medical practices in certain cultures.
