Craft Whiskey starts on the farm. Frey Ranch Distillery is a farm-to-bottle whiskey distillery, growing all the wheat, barley, rye, and corn for each bottle on 1,500 acres. Colby and Ashley Frey are shining a new light on whiskey in Fallon, Nevada. Their passion for providing quality whiskey started from a childhood dream of farming. “Taking a seed, growing a crop and then taking that crop and creating a product that you can share with people is really fulfilling,” said Colby. “And it’s introduced me to people around the world who appreciate whiskey. I’ve got the best job in the world.” Colby hopes the ranch remains in their family for generations to come. He recognizes that when growing their business a trusted financial partner is important, and they found that in American AgCredit. It's not news to those involved in agriculture that farming is a stressful occupation. Multiple studies show that farmer suicide rates are 2-5x higher than the national average. Extreme weather events, financial uncertainty, and fluctuating markets all lead to increased anxiety and depression. Farmington Municipal Schools recognizes how important it is for youth to understand where their food comes from. Their school district is teaming up with Farmington Boys & Girls Club and San Juan County NMSU extension to start a 4-H program for middle school students. Through funding from the Rural Roots Endowment, this after school program will give students the opportunity to grow food and work with local producers.
