Recent AAP policy statement, The Link Between School Attendance and Good Health, points to a chain reaction that begins with chronic absences: Poor attendance can lead to lower educational attainment; which can lead to lower-paying, less-fulfilling jobs; which can lead to feelings of having no control or social support in one’s life. Pediatricians and educators can work together to reduce chronic absenteeism. @AAPNews details what that partnership looks like, including keeping accommodating office hours, improving messaging to families about when children should stay home if sick and how long, and more: https://lnkd.in/eHxeMXhT

As pediatricians, AAP mourns with the children and families of Apalachee High School in Georgia. Children and teachers returning to schools shouldn’t have to worry about the threat of gun violence, but yet another community in this country has been tragically affected by a school shooting. Gun violence is a threat to children everywhere and AAP will continue to advocate for policies to keep children safe and to #EndGunViolence.
