Can pain thresholds help diagnose tension-type headache (TTH)? A new diagnostic accuracy study explored whether clinical, psychological, or psychophysical variables, particularly pressure pain thresholds (PPTs) and dynamic pain thresholds (DPTs), could differentiate individuals with and without TTH or distinguish between frequent episodic (FETTH) and chronic (CTTH) TTH. Pain medicine is at a crossroads. The annual #AAPM Pain Pulse Survey captures the perspectives of practitioners on the biggest challenges and opportunities shaping the field today. Here’s what stood out: ?? Over 50% of surveyed professionals say pain medicine has worsened in the last five years—citing regulatory hurdles, reimbursement issues, and public misunderstanding. ?? 46.6% say financial and reimbursement challenges are their top obstacle, making it harder to provide quality care. ?? 62% are deeply concerned about the opioid crisis and its impact on their practice, influencing treatment decisions and policy. ?? Neuromodulation, regenerative medicine, and non-opioid treatments are seen as the most promising areas for pain research in the next decade. ?? 63.5% believe the public is misinformed about pain medicine, underscoring the need for better education and awareness.
