Join us for our next webinar on Wednesday, October 9th at NOON Eastern / 9 AM Pacific. This webinar is titled “The Gateway Reserve: A Story of Geology, History, and Water in the Northern Buffer.” FREE to all AAEES Members. $40 fee for non-members. https://lnkd.in/gdF26iem Webinar Summary The Gateway Reserve (TGR) is a 12 acre project with old sacred roots, Industrial Revolution resource extraction fingerprints, and an existential threat that motivated a drive to secure the future. TGR sits within Boise Idaho, one of the fastest growing metropolitan areas, now facing development pressure on all sides. At the edge of the largest desert in North America, lies a place called “Cop-Cop-Pa-Ala” by the indigenous Shoshone and Bannock people, who gathered along the river, traded peacefully, and lived with abundant water, plants, and wildlife. TGR was created from land intercepted from a home developer in order to protect a Northern Buffer with appropriate opportunities for humanity to enjoy this special place. This small non-commercial project was astoundingly complex requiring cooperation of Federal, State, County, and City agencies and input from public hearings, neighborhood associations, and in-kind donations from consultants and contractors. Design considerations included surface water, groundwater, water rights, FEMA and FERC jurisdictions, and study results authored by the Army Corps of Engineers. The remediation, cleanup, design, permitting, and construction process to recover the sublime from the mundane took about 11 years. By October of 2023 with the lower wetland and upland native xeriscape fully established, birds, raptors, mice, deer, bobcat, fox, owls, and coyote call this place home. So do the visiting humans and local artists who respectfully keep their distance and enjoy the beauty of nature’s offerings. The Gateway Reserve is a gem that protects and contributes to the common good. #boardcertified #environmentalengineering #environmentalscience #wastewater #geology #cleanwater #groundwater #siteremediation ##industrialhygiene

Join us TODAY at NOON Eastern / 9 AM Pacific. This webinar is titled “NW Natural Gas Interceptor Trench Remediation Project Portland, Oregon.” FREE to all AAEES Members. $40 fee for non-members. https://lnkd.in/gdF26iem 2024 Excellence in Environmental Engineering and Science? Awards Competition Winner - Grand Prize in Industrial Waste Practice Webinar Summary The webinar will describe the initial work begun in 2009 to clean up and remediate a former manufactured-gas plant site located directly on banks of the Willamette River in Portland Oregon. The site soils are contaminated with high levels of volatile organic compounds including F-002 listed hazardous solvents, naphthalene, cyanide, heavy metals, high levels of soluble iron, and mechanically emulsified oils. We will describe the method used to intercept contaminated groundwater flowing through the site from reaching the river, which fluctuates with daily tides and by seasonally. That groundwater containing a variable “chemical soup” is pretreated in two plants: one for hazardous wastewater and one for nonhazardous wastewater before being combined and sent to the main plant for further processing and discharge to the river. Recent changes to groundwater flow necessitated the design of a new trench system to intercept and treat a new more concentrated waste stream within the existing process, while still maintaining the original operation which must operate 24/7/365. We will describe the design approach taken to overcome the initial and more recent challenges posed by a continually changing waste stream with a wide range of contaminants and a final discharge governed by very restrictive discharge limits. We will also include lessons learned. The plant has operated continuously since 2013. The more recent improvements began operating on the same 24/7/365 basis since 2022.
