New publication: “The Global Quest for Educational Equity” explores the theory, policies, and practices that scholars around the world are developing to increase educational equity for diverse groups of students. The explosive growth in the number of migrant, refugee, and marginalized students globally has put great stress on the schools tasked with educating them. Schools and teachers rarely have the knowledge, resources, or support to meet these students’ needs. This too often leaves students struggling to learn in a language they don’t understand, and from a culture and curriculum that exclude them. How can schools ensure that marginalized students can achieve at levels comparable to the dominant groups in their societies? The issue’s multidisciplinary and international group of authors answer using a case-study approach, offering in-depth analysis of what works and what hasn’t in a variety of different national, ethnic, and cultural contexts: from Australia to Lebanon, Mexico, and South Africa; and from the Canada to China, India, and the United States. Join the Academy on December 4 for the launch of?Achieving Civil Justice, the final report of the?Making Justice Accessible project. The report features case studies illustrating how Americans can gain access to the support they need, when and how they need it, from trusted, quality providers. This is made possible when civil justice efforts partner with businesses, philanthropy, community organizations, technologists, and higher education. This session will bring together leaders who have stewarded much needed support for and attention to local and national civil justice efforts across the country. Engraved above the nation’s highest court are the words ‘"Equal Justice Under Law." But for too many Americans, the country’s justice system falls short on this promise, finding instead the civil justice gap – the chasm between the legal needs of Americans and their access to adequate legal assistance. How can the #civiljusticegap?be narrowed? Learn more about the event and register here:?https://lnkd.in/g33gfJfb

Join us tomorrow for a discussion on the importance of science communication and strategies to bridge the gap between science and the public.?Public trust in science is declining in the United States; contributing factors include misinformation, polarization, politicization, and algorithmically-generated news. Only by gaining a better understanding of the causes of the divisions and how to address them can we rebuild trust and repair societal fractures. How can scientists, scholars, journalists, institutional leaders, and others who shape public opinion and trust engage with a divided public in constructive ways? This event - part of the Academy's Morton L. Mandel Conversation series - is open to the public.
