In 1945, American troops landed on the Japanese island of Iwo Jima and engaged in a key World War II battle. On this day, resilience was immortalized when six Marines raised the American flag atop Mount Suribachi, resulting in a now-iconic photograph that serves as the inspiration for the U.S. Marine Corps War Memorial. ???? As we head towards #America250, let us honor the courage, sacrifice, and valor of the soldiers of Iwo Jima. (??: Joe Rosenthal)

This #BlackHistoryMonth, we celebrate Americans like Frederick Douglass— a self-taught abolitionist, writer, and orator who helped change the course of American history. Douglass' legacy continues to inspire and proves the power of the written word. Honor Douglass by visiting his home Cedar Hill—a National Historic Site run by the National Park Service since 1988!

On February 9, 1737, Thomas Paine was born. The author of “Common Sense,” Paine’s work is a symbol of the American spirit at the time of the Revolution –?and beyond. This fiery pamphlet laid out a bold argument for freedom and liberty, speaking directly to the hearts of people across the 13 original colonies. According to some historians, “Common Sense” sold over half a million copies by the end of the Revolution.
