Social Security beneficiaries who want to return to work encounter rules that are overly complicated. BUT, a key thing to understand is that we already have Employment Network, state vocational rehabilitation, WIPA and other professionals fully capable of helping a disabled person navigate the process. None of these helpers charge the beneficiary for services, and they all know these rules backward and forward. Employment Networks are poised for growth, more possible now than ever because of Commissioner O’Malley’s corrections to the problem of work-related overpayments. We don’t need to wait for legislation to simplify rules. The solutions are already in place, waiting to be promoted. We need to allow Employment Networks to reach their full potential. Those that have been trying to grow ENs can tell us a lot about how to simplify communications, which beneficiaries are more likely to engage, and most importantly—when. We can fix this!
