Today, Ben and Tyler E. Loehrl from the Ambrose Engineering, Inc. team had the opportunity to speak with students at Muskego High School about structural engineering as an introduction to a career in that field. After a short activity to create the tallest tower from a single sheet of paper, the students learned a little about the processes used in structural design, centered around a demonstration and discussion of the various lateral systems that buildings utilize to resolve lateral forces down to the foundation. Ben and Tyler used popsicle sticks and binder clips to demonstrate the behavior of and considerations for moment frames, braced frames, and shear walls. This was followed by an examination and explanation of the actual design methods and construction practices used in the school’s newly opened addition, through the lens of comparing the structural plans and details to the final constructed elements. #careerexploration #careerday #muskegohighschool #structuralengineering
