Let’s nerd out on polyester with Shay Sethi, CEO and co-founder of Ambercycle. When was it invented? What’s it made from? How did it become the number one material in fashion? Can it be recycled? Spoiler alert:?Now?it can.
At Ambercycle, we're changing humanity's relationship with materials. We believe textiles and consumer goods are valuable materials that should be completely regenerative the way basic materials are in nature. Our technology enables true circularity by unlocking the creation of decarbonized raw materials from end-of-life goods. cycora?, our high-quality regenerated polyester, is our first product that offers the same strength and versatility as virgin polyester, at less than half the CO2 emissions associated with petroleum-based fibers.

These former college roommates set up Ambercycle to address the billions of garments that are made and go to waste every year. After five years of testing, they now have brands like?GANNI,?Reformation?and?Arc'teryx Equipment?committed to using their regenerated material, called cycora. Calling all designers of the new world. This week, our team launched our first-ever cycora? fabric collection, ss25: reflections—a lighthouse project to showcase the possibilities and applications of our regenerated material within high-quality, performance applications. cycora? stands for material excellence—both in quality and impact. And now, we get to show the world what that looks and feels like in a new form. When I first started this journey with Ambercycle, cycora? was a vision—an unwavering dedication to reimagining our material world, to giving new life to what was once considered waste. We set out to prove that circularity isn’t just possible—it’s beautiful. After four years of innovation, testing, and refinement, we can now showcase that vision in a tangible way. Design and innovation have the power to reshape the world. Now, we invite our community—designers, brands, and retailers—to help bring this future to life. We’re opening our LA studio for hands-on sessions with our partners to brainstorm where imagination meets material excellence. A huge congratulations to our incredible brand and product teams— Eunice, Will, Gabriella, and Kathleen—for bringing us one step closer to living in material harmony. I’m excited to live in the world we are building together.

100 billion garments are produced every year—yet 70% of textiles end up in landfills or incinerators within just a few years, and less than 1% is recycled into new clothing. Ambercycle is changing that. By turning the textiles of the past into the clothing of the future, they're closing the loop on fashion waste. We worked with sustainable storytelling director Kate Oliva to produce a video on theis story, since it has so many parallels hers. More from her below! "As a filmmaker working at the intersection of storytelling and impact, my work is constantly challenging me to ask: how do we create a safe, happy, and healthy world? The short answer: collective action. The long answer: a million efforts, both big and small. In my own life, I've been obsessed with reducing waste and being a conscious consumer. When my partner and I recently moved in together, I made a comprehensive plan for handling anything we no longer needed. We did a mix of clothing swaps with friends, selling them to thrift stores, distributing them through mutual aid, and textile recycling. This felt super empowering, but I know that most people aren't excited about the idea of designing multi-step systems to prevent textile waste (I swear I have other, more normal hobbies!) - and individual actions aren't enough to shift these systems. Every year, over 100 billion garments are made and go to landfill, and less than 1% is made back into new clothing. We need companies focused on changing the way we do things. That's why I was so excited to direct this piece about Ambercycle, which is tackling textile waste in such an innovative way. They're giving people the option to shift their mindset on consumption - how much we buy, how those items are made, and what their lifecycle really looks like - and make individual changes that could reverberate through their communities. Even more than that, their story has the power to inspire more people to demand these changes on a systems level, which can move us towards a better world for ourselves and our communities. I hope you feel as inspired by their story as I was!" Director: Kate Oliva Producer/Editor: Benjamin Suliteanu DOP: Leah Anova, ICFC Sound: Gwendolyn Wang
Last week, we hosted?PREFACE SHOW at Ambercycle HQ in Los Angeles. This year’s theme,?“The Journey,”?delved into the lifecycle of clothing—from production to distribution and its eventual end of life. We proudly showcased our molecular regeneration technology and cycora? products as circular solutions to close the loop on the clothing lifecycle. Alongside innovators and partners like?Hyosung Performance Textiles and?FibreTrace? , we explored how collaboration drives sustainable transformation. Through interactive lab tours, attendees experienced firsthand how innovation is reshaping the textile industry. Thank you to everyone who joined us in advancing the conversation around the possibilities of circularity and a big thank you to the Preface team for a wonderful event. #Ambercycle #cycora #CircularFashion #MaterialScience #MaterialInnovation
Ambercycle is proud to announce our latest offtake agreement with Ganni A/S. The agreement follows GANNI's Paris Fashion Week debut, where they showcased several garments made with cycora? material. Inspired by the positive reception and growing demand, our teams came together to solidify our partnership in an agreement that will replace over 20% of GANNI's annual virgin and bottle-recycled polyester usage with cycora?. “At GANNI, we’re always looking for ways to improve and take responsibility for our impact. Partnering with Ambercycle on an offtake agreement for cycora? is a natural step in our commitment to circular, low-impact solutions. There’s an urgent need to support innovators and drive long-term collaboration while holding ourselves accountable to transition to better material choices. We’re excited to see the impact this collaboration will have in the years ahead," says Nicolaj Reffstrup, GANNI Founder.
