Foster Care Facts: Did you know that black, indigenous and youth of color are over represented in the foster care system? Black children specifically are 2x’s and Native American youth are 3x’s as likely to be impacted by the child welfare system compared to white children? Did you know that Amara aims to close this gap? As we enter into a season that will make it harder to implement the DEI lens in our work, it must not stop our mission to ensure families get the support to not loose their child or youth to the child welfare system, and if they do, we want to ensure we have foster families at the ready to be that support, until youth can safely return to their family. If that is not an option, we have resource to support from there. This is my lived experience, while kinship was not and option for myself and my sister, we were placed in the home of a foster parent who made sure we grew up together. I don’t know who is reading this and needs to know, if you are a grand-parent, auntie or uncle that has found yourself in a situation that is depending on you to take in a kin, Amara can help you with that even if you are not licensed. Additionally, if you are a family that would like to foster to support a child or young person in their journey, I don’t care what race, we can help you navigate that as well, and get licensed.
