One of the most visually appealing parts of Michigan Central Station is the buff yellow brick masonry, arranged in vertical columns designed to accentuate the building’s height. ? Over time — both during the building’s use and after its closure — the fa?ade became damaged and stained, giving the building its soiled and dingy appearance, which became a visual symbol of the building’s decline. ? Accumulation of soot from the trains and air pollutants dulled the buff masonry over time. As moisture migrated through the stone, efflorescence bloomed, dark staining emerged, and mortar was eroded. ? One of the primary objectives of the station’s rehabilitation was to restore the fa?ade to as close to its original 1913 appearance as possible, thus marking a new beginning for the station. ? The most effective cleaning products and methods were determined through a series of mock-ups. Different cleaning products, application methods, water pressures and dwell times were evaluated to determine which combination produced the desired results without adversely affecting the brick. ? In the end, roughly eight acres of masonry with more than 100 years of built-up soot, pollution and graffiti were scrubbed, cleaned, repaired and repointed with new compatible mortar.? ? About 900 iron window spandrels were cleaned of rust and repainted.?Skilled Mason’s reset stone walls, terra cotta, and brick from the ground all the way up 235 feet to the top of the tower.????
