Our partners at Organizing Resilience are responding to the devastating storm in the Houston metro area that has left nearly 1 million people without power. In just a few hours, they launched a rapid response fund in close partnership with frontline organizations. Nearly 100 years ago, garment workers came together to create the Amalgamated Bank to serve the needs of working people and their families. This history is the root of Amalgamated Foundation’s commitment to workers and partnership with economic justice initiatives like The LIFT Fund, a first-of-its-kind philanthropic and labor collaborative. Jennifer Epps, Executive Director of The LIFT Fund, points out in a new article in Nonprofit Quarterly that philanthropy can and should do more to support workers. Jennifer offers us three ways we can be part of the change: ?? Fund worker organizing groups led by BIPOC workers, who are leading the worker movement and developing the most innovative models of organizing. ?? Prioritize not just “jobs,” but “good jobs” that pay living wages and ensure basic rights and benefits. ?? Amplify and accelerate new mechanisms for worker organizing and self-determination.
