“Sunday at #Ride2EndALZ Minnesota was so much more than a ride. It was a community coming together.” Laurie Reed rides in honor of her mom as Team Captain of Team Forget Me. Laurie knows firsthand the heartbreak of watching a loved one lose part of themselves. This past weekend, Laurie joined a community of over 300 cyclists who pedaled their way to an incredible fundraising milestone of $357K (and counting!) — all to fuel cutting-edge research in the fight to end Alzheimer’s and all other dementia. And they couldn’t have done it without the support of amazing volunteers, donors, friends and family who cheered them on every mile of the way. Thank you, cyclists, for going the distance to help #ENDALZ! ?? ?? ??

Shiann Moraida from Cameron County Public Health in Texas is part of the Alzheimer's Association Healthy Brain Initiative Road Map Strategist program. This initiative provides direct funding, training and technical?assistance to local?health departments to increase their ability to address brain health in their communities. Shiann works on the Texas border in a community that is 90% Hispanic/Latino and driven by a culture of familism. She has been instrumental in initiating conversations and spreading educational awareness about the importance of early detection and diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease. Shiann credits the Healthy Brain Initiative Road Map Strategist Program for opening doors and extending their reach: "With this new program at the county public health entity, I feel that doors have been opened up, our reach has extended, and we are making a larger impact in our community."

Christine Perez has seen the impact of Alzheimer’s and dementia on her own family, as well as the community she supports in her role as the Director of Programs for the National Hispanic Council on Aging (NHCOA). A few years ago, Christine’s grandfather was diagnosed with dementia. It impacted the way he communicated with his family members, causing him to forget names and the memories they had made together. He passed away in 2020. In her role with NHCOA, Christine partners with the Alzheimer’s Association to better reach and engage the Latino community with vital information on early detection, diagnosis, care, treatment options, clinical trial participation and advocacy opportunities. She serves as an advisor for the Association as we work to develop additional culturally relevant resources to address the need for greater representation in clinical trials. Christine also serves on our DEI Council, sharing her expertise to inform strategy and development of resources to best serve the individuals in the Latino community who have been impacted by Alzheimer’s and other dementia. Ilia Riviera began volunteering with the Alzheimer’s Association after her mother was diagnosed with vascular dementia. As a community educator, she uses her first-hand experience to help families impacted by dementia get the resources and information they need. Ilia also raises funds and awareness to #ENDALZ by rallying her community to take action as a Walk to End Alzheimer’s committee member. Alzheimer’s ambassador and health services professional Hector Montesino has lost many family members to Alzheimer’s, including his beloved grandmother who was “vibrant, loving and a fantastic cook.” Many of Hector’s family members immigrated from the Dominican Republic where they had limited access to education, making navigating diagnosis and care a challenge. Hector hopes more Latinx community members join him in becoming a volunteer to increase representation in Alzheimer’s and dementia research and care and support outreach. Hector says he has “seen the disease ravage families and knows how much support is needed.” We are so grateful to Hector and all those taking action to strengthen the health of their communities and to fight Alzheimer’s and all other dementia.
