Promising new research finds that a drug that removes beta-amyloid plaques — a hallmark of Alzheimer’s — from the brain may delay onset of the disease. Researchers examined the impact of the drug on a small group of individuals with a rare genetic mutation that virtually guarantees they will develop the disease. Twenty-two participants who started the study with no symptoms and received the drug the longest — more than 8 years — cut their risk of symptom onset in half. These families with Alzheimer’s-causing genes are helping answer a critical question for anyone at risk: Can blocking or eliminating amyloid buildup really stave off symptoms? “It is exciting to think about the possibility that Alzheimer’s disease might not be what gets me.” -June Ward, study participant Read the full story: bit.ly/4l6Zzlq.

#WomensHistoryMonth gives us a chance to reflect on the legacy of two important people in the fight to end Alzheimer’s disease; Hollywood icon Rita Hayworth and her daughter, Princess Yasmin Aga Khan. After Silver Screen legend Rita Hayworth was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in 1980, Princess Yasmin Aga Khan, publicly shared her mother's diagnosis. When she did, she ignited an important national conversation about the disease. Princess Yasmin Aga Khan founded the Rita Hayworth Gala in New York in 1984 in honor of her mother. Since then, the event has evolved into the Imagine Benefit, built on the legacy of the Rita Hayworth Gala, and the Chicago Rita Hayworth Gala. Together, these events have raised nearly $90 million to advance the mission of the Alzheimer's Association. #ENDALZ

Dolores Freudenberg was never formally trained as an artist, but has always dabbled in arts and crafts. Her late husband Donald displayed signs of Alzheimer’s towards the end of his life, which inspired Dolores to use her talents to make a difference. Each year, she makes hand-made quilled greeting cards to raise funds for the Alzheimer’s Association in his honor by participating in The Longest Day. Dolores taught herself to quill many years ago, sharing that she chose the Alzheimer’s Association as the recipient of all proceeds from her greeting cards because “I can truly empathize with the multitude of caregivers that lovingly attend to the needs of their loved ones.” Dolores hopes her cards “bring a smile to the face of whomever buys or receives them.” We are so grateful to Dolores for her unwavering support in honor of her husband. She has already surpassed her $1,600 fundraising goal, becoming a Solstice Champion, and is still going! Thank you, Dolores, for using your artistry to strengthen the fight to #ENDALZ. You can stand up to the darkness of Alzheimer’s with Dolores by participating in #TheLongestDay. Select your activity and register today at alz.org/thelongestday. #NationalCraftMonth

During #WomensHistoryMonth, we’re celebrating the life of the iconic B. Smith, who the world lost to Alzheimer’s in 2020. B. was one of the first Black models to grace the cover of Mademoiselle magazine and continued breaking barriers as a restaurateur and lifestyle guru. After learning she had early-onset Alzheimer’s, B. bravely shared her journey with Alzheimer’s disease, helping to fight the stigma that can come with the disease. We’re forever grateful for her work as an advocate for those living with Alzheimer’s. #ENDALZ
