Vivek Lal, M.D. is a physician scientist, innovator and entrepreneur. He is the Clinical Director of Innovation at The Marnix Heersink Institute of Biomedical Innovation, Professor and the Director of Pulmonary Microbiome Lab at University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). Dr. Lal is the Founder and CEO of ResBiotic Nutrition, Inc., a company that makes science backed wellness supplements. He is also the founder of Alveolus Bio, Inc., a platform biotech company which does FDA approved pulmonary drug development & Urgent Care for Children, a Southeast US based urgent care chain headquartered in AL. After medical school and residency training, Dr. Lal completed his clinical fellowship and research fellowship at University of Texas at Southwestern, Dallas, TX, followed by an executive program in Drug and Device Development from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Dr. Lal’s Microbiome Lab has been funded by NIH-NHLBI and AHA to evaluate the role of the microbiome in the development of diseases. Dr. Lal has published over 100 peer reviewed research manuscripts or abstracts and has several patents under his name as an inventor. Heersink School of Medicine has been exclusively licensed and commercialized through Alveolus Bio, which is now gearing up for its phase 1b clinical trials. Our work showcases how particle-engineered non-GMO lactobacilli can be safely inhaled in preclinical models to reduce neutrophilic inflammation in the lungs. This is more than just science—it’s about reimagining “air as medicine.” Disruptive innovation only happens when we dare to break norms and push the boundaries of conventional thinking. A New Milestone For Microbiome Therapeutics: A Lactobacilli-based Inhaled Live Biotherapeutic For Lung Disease Treatment #Mysummary In this refreshing study from The Microbiome Mavericks C. Vivek Lal, MD, FAAP, the team presents the potential of a Lactobacillus-based inhaled live biotherapeutic product (LBP) to treat chronic lung diseases like Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia (BPD) and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). The team engineered a spray-dried formulation of three Lactobacillus strains, Lactobacillus plantarum, L. acidophilus, and L. rhamnosus. When tested on double-hit BPD model in newborn mice exposed to hyperoxia and E. coli and several COPD models in adult mice, the Lactobacillus-based Live Biotherapeutic (LBP) showed: ??The LBP decreased inflammation by reducing key inflammation markers like MMP-9 and MPO. ??Treatment with the LBP led to structural improvements in the lungs, such as increased radial alveolar counts. ??The active component produced by the LBP in vivo, L(+) lactic acid, plays a critical anti-inflammatory role. #Mythoughts What’s surprising is the LBP’s efficacy matched or even surpassed that of steroids in certain aspects, especially in managing steroid-resistant inflammation!
