ARUSD alum and videographer Antonio Castillo, along with Giuliana Velasquez Rosas, are part of the video team filming Superintendent Germán Cerda to get the word out about the college-oriented CalKIDS Program. Great to see our alumni doing great things in the community! CalKIDS is a college savings program that gives eligible students $500 or more (over 85% of Alum Rock families are eligible)! All families need to do is claim their account. Excite Credit Union is a strong partner in the effort to spread the word and made the video possible. They are also the local credit union partnering with the state to help families claim their accounts. Learn more at CalKIDS.org

ARUSD's Student Advisory Council (SAC) was hard at work earlier this week! SAC is made of 6th-8th graders selected or elected to serve by their peers and administrators to represent their school, serve as a voice for the student body, and collaborate with their school admin and counselors to co-design school-wide events and/or initiatives. This month's meeting was focused on learning about the progress of the Muwekma Ohlone tribe and the Trail of Truth, working on a Design Challenge to build the tallest tower with just 20 notecards, and learning how to stay abreast of new Assembly Bills signed into law from the Governor Gavin Newsom's Office. This month they were unpacking AB1955 and implications at ARUSD. The council is facilitated by Katie Wyatt, M.Ed, ARUSD's Coordinator of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.

??????Superintendent Germán Cerda joined Adelante's Community Liaison Patty Rocha and Assistant Principal Maria Belen Taitano in celebrating students who had perfect attendance in the first few months of school (From August 2024 to November 8, 2024). Students with perfect attendance were visited in their classroom with a snack cart and music to celebrate their efforts. Students got to choose their treats and earned a Certificate of Attendance. These recognitions are part of the school's efforts to improve schoolwide attendance and motivate students to make it to school every day! Congrats! EVERY DAY COUNTS! Attendance Matters.

ARUSD hosted the 2024 Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA) Winter Showcase, featuring talented students from Joseph George Visual and Performing Arts Academy, Lyndale, Linda Vista, Cureton Elementary Schools, and ARUSD's Mariachi! Congratulations to all student performers on a great show! Director of Academic Services, Tara Bickford-Williams, Ed.D. shared "Visual and performing arts programs are not just an enrichment; they are essential pathways to creativity, critical thinking, and cultural awareness. They empower students to express themselves, connect with their community, and develop skills that inspire innovation in all aspects of life.” A special thanks also to all the staff that helped make this event a reality.

Great seeing Trustee Minh Pham's "Tour of Alum Rock"! Thanks Trustee Pham!
On the road supporting Alum Rock Schools. The 2024 "Tour of Alum Rock" picked up again today with myself, Board President Chavez, and Supt. Cerda visiting Meyer Elementary, Renaissance at Fischer Middle, and Cassell Elementary. In challenging times, I believe it's every school board member's job to go out and support all kids in the district. As always, I read to as many lower grade classes, took part in a 5th grade writing assignment about trying something new in the community, taught third graders via story time about the importance of saving money, and saw an 8th grade debate over voting. Lots of things are happening in our schools. Reaching out to our kids is an important way of helping them through the challenges facing their lives. At Meyer, I pointed out some of the the administration will face in having a school near Reid-Hillview Airport. Over in Renaissance-Fischer, we looked at the amenities and the importance of ensuring the ability of Alum Rock Schools to offer above and beyond any charter school. Closing out at Cassell, I got to see the Dolphin Store in action, creating a learning environment for kids through positive incentives. Though there are challenges facing the Alum Rock Union Elementary School District, we still maintain music at all schools, Verizon Learning Labs at many of our middle schools, and so much more. These are opportunities only found at your neighborhood school and I hope you'll take a look at what Alum Rock can offer your child. On a bittersweet note, I joined Councilmember Perter Ortiz and Supervisor-Elect Betty Duong at the Farewell Party for County Supervisor Cindy Chavez. I have had the pleasure of knowing her as a friend and mentor for almost 20 years. I will never forget her unconditional support for my school board election and it was an honor and a pleasure to have my campaign be a part of her mayoral campaign. As a constituent whose seen her in action standing up and getting more for East Side San Jose, I'm going to miss her around here. I wish her all the best in her next role as County Manager of Bernalillo County in New Mexico (which includes Albuquerque) and I look forward to being part of the "Welcome Back Party" when she returns.
