CEO Altin Biosciences: A Paradigm Shift in Uterine Fibroid Drug Development

#1 Uterine Fibroid Conference with The White Dress Project at Johns Hopkins The most informative patient advocacy conference on uterine fibroids is offered annually by The White Dress Project (TWDP). Celebrating its 10th anniversary last week TWDP, founded by the incomparable Tanika G. Valbrun centers patients and the research on common chronic gynecological conditions. Opening with a compelling documentary Me.Period and closing with the Black Women's Health Vanguard Blossom Award to Linda Goler Blount, MPH, CEO of the Black Women's Health Imperative, well-organized, packed sessions were expertly moderated by WUSA9’s Delia Gon?alves and Warrior Wednesdays’ fertility advocate Kellee Stewart. I’m a research junkie and resonated with Johns Hopkins’ Dr. James Segars credo “Information IS Empowerment.” News to me: Under the microscope, Dr. Segars, Bhuchitra Singh, MD, MPH, MS, MBA and colleagues determined characteristics of fibroids vary between Black and White women. We must better understand the mechanisms at work. More research please! To that end, it was terrific to meet the next generation of PhDs/candidates Johns Hopkins Medicine. The 2017 work by Dr. Ayman Al Hendy evaluating the annual U.S. burden of fibroids at $34.4 Billion has been updated to quantify the current yearly U.S. fibroid cost at $44.2 Billion. The cost estimate is an update of Dr. Segars’ previous study in 2010 by Cardozo et al. The update was presented at the Society for Reproductive Investigations annual meeting in March 2024 by Dr. Singh and his team and will be published shortly. Dr. Segars went on to point out: “In no other disease would we not do anything for a condition that 25% of Black women will experience by age 25.” Pelvic floor rehabilitation expert Justine Roper says above all, having fibroids takes “Grit!” In this room filled with love, joy and a sea of people dressed in white, you’ll find men supporting their loved ones in their quest to live a full life despite fibroids. Joseph Kendrick,?is the?advocate for his wife,?VA pharmacist?Katashia Partee Kendrick, PharmD, BCACP, IHP2;?paul gause, is the advocate for his wife?Bianca Gause,?and utilizes?his professional?sports profile?to promote female health?education?and?wellness?in the sports community; TWDP Board Member?Derek Vitatoe recognizes “We have to change the narrative.”?He share hard episodes were not the fault of his?wife?Broyny Vitatoe; it was?the fibroid?in?control.”?He?counsels men to?“Step up and be supportive of women. Lean in!” Session recordings will be available to?provide critical information on: prevention; menstrual leave; employment retention/satisfaction;?thoughts on ethical and equitable treatment from Veronica Robinson, great-granddaughter of Henrietta Lacks;?and so much more.?Highly recommend seeking out the recordings to witness the power of patient advocacy and how it fuels female health research. #TWDP10 #Fibroidsawareness #wecanwearwhite Altin Biosciences
