I am actually slightly ashamed I didn’t know this dbt hack It’s increased my productivity and code quality no end. How? Well it.. ??AUTOMATES WRITING AND ADDING TESTS Writing custom macros for tests is fine but a bit of a draw. The worst part is manually adding them to yml files ??WRITING DOCUMENTATION Writing column definitions is a super boring task no one enjoys. As you might expect this feature uses #ai, so grab it while the credits are free / often the column names are bad ???ADDING SCHEMA If you use a semantic layer like cube or Lightdash they are pretty useless unless you define your scheme explicitly. This is tedious esp. if you have loads of columns. You can do this automatically using this hack And finally the one you’ve all been waiting for! ???? COLUMN LEVEL LINEAGE Yes you can view column level lineage for free within VSCODE. While it doesn’t help at all for debugging failed pipelines (it’s just metadata) it is very useful for auditing models and re architecting if you are so inclined I am of course talking about Altimate AI ‘s dbt power user. I've been diving into DBT lately and I can see why it blew up. The ability to put data pipelines into source control while using Jinja2's templating for abstraction makes it extremely flexible while offering necessary features such as data lineage, data quality, and documentation all under the same roof. For those already on board, I wanted to point out the Visual Studio extension: DBT Power User. The extension supports syntax/autocomplete, an easy way to document models through a UI (and avoiding those lovely yamls..), lineage visualization at your finger tips, and integrated buttons for all of the common DBT commands: run, tests, build etc. Pretty cool development tool I ran into while I've been doing a deep-dive and learning some DBT!
