Following the Fed's interest rate cut announcement yesterday, I shared some thoughts with The Wall Street Journal's Yuliya Chernova and Marc Vartabedian about what this means for the venture capital community. As mentioned in their piece, I think the size of the first rate cut mattered less to the venture world than the broader confirmation that interest rates had entered a dovish phase. It will likely take several quarters for the full effects to be felt, but we should see LP sentiment improve soon: "I believe LPs will become more active and serious in their conversations with new venture fund managers in 2025. I will shift the timing of my next fundraise according to the changing LP sentiment and LP capital availability." #venturecapital #vc #emergingmanagers

As people live longer and social security becomes more uncertain, millions of Americans face the risk of outliving their savings. The shift from defined benefit to defined contribution plans such as 401(k)s hasn't created security in retirement, in part due to underutilization and in part due to outdated approaches to asset allocation. The good news is that technology is enabling greater access, enhanced product diversification, and the ability to design portfolios with specific outcomes. From the inception of Altari Ventures, I saw a significant opportunity for enterprise fintechs to address the 401(k) asset allocation challenge and expand access to retirement plans for underserved employee segments. I’ve shared my thoughts on this topic in the below article for InvestmentNews. With over $7 trillion in 401(k) assets and growing, this market has attracted a diverse crop of startups at all industry layers, making retirement exciting for early stage fintech investors. I am seeing several facets of this theme play out firsthand in the Altari portfolio, with Trevor Gary and Micruity, Kelby Meyers, CPFA?, AIF and Nestimate, and Jean Smart and Penelope. Operating a financial services company is an inherently risky proposition. On top of common risks present in all large enterprises, the notable degree of intentional risk taking is what enables financial institutions to better serve their customers and create shareholder value. Also importantly, the regulatory burden as a consequence of mismanaging risk is uniquely heavy and long-lasting in financial services. There are as many varieties of risk inside financial firms as there are ice cream flavors—maybe more. That’s why risk management presents such a fruitful playground for enterprise fintech companies looking to solve real problems and consistently win clients. If founders can identify and mitigate a critical risk exposure, they will benefit from an accelerated sales cycle versus peers selling a better way of doing things. The below graphic offers a non-exhaustive but representative list of risk management concerns faced by financial enterprises. These big buckets of risk are also areas where I’m seeing many interesting fintech startups rise to the occasion to solve these challenges.
