Alta Journal is a quarterly publication for anyone seeking an insider’s take on California and the West.
关于我们
With a mix of stories as diverse and vibrant as the place it covers, Alta Journal demystifies and illuminates California and the West for our readers. From provocative essays to investigative pieces, original fiction to cultural commentary, sumptuous photos to topical cartoons, the quarterly examines this compelling and complex region through a literary lens. The journal’s large pages, full-bleed photos, and perfect binding celebrate the power and beauty of print. Founded in 2017 by William R. Hearst III, Alta Journal provides an exciting—and much-needed—literary perspective on the West, sparking conversations that are as diverse and vibrant as the place itself. Alta’s commitment to literature extends beyond the magazine. Our free, monthly California Book Club provides a carefully curated, intimate online interview series hosted by John Freeman. Guests included Hua Hsu, Isabel Allende, Dave Eggers, Jennifer Egan, and Andrew Sean Greer. We invite CBC members—12,000 and counting—to examine and reflect upon each title through regular essays and articles leading up to each event. We also produce several weekly newsletters, as well as digital and in-person events. We aim to bring the Alta experience directly to our deeply engaged audience. From our weekly Zoom program called Alta Live, our version of a chat show featuring writers, artists, and culture makers from the pages of Alta, to our regular Monday Book Review focused on new releases from West Coast authors, to issue launch parties hosted in partnership with independent bookstores, we’ve built an ever-growing community of captivated—and satisfied—readers. In this era of rapid change, the award-winning Alta Journal offers an immersive literary experience like no other.

This Thanksgiving, we're revisiting the work of M.F.K. Fisher, an underrated California voice. "She’s widely known as a food writer, perhaps the first American to elevate that genre into an art form," Jim Lewis writes. "But that’s banal, a bit tame, like calling Bruce Chatwin a travel writer or Anne Carson a literary critic, and Fisher threw it back. 'I do not consider myself a food writer,' she once said, testily, wearily, accurately. It’s harder to say what, instead, she was." Read more: bit.ly/4i5gCCJ Illustration by Thomas Ehretsmann

Great team making incredible content. Our Black Friday sale is perfect opportunity to subscribe!
This Thanksgiving, I want to express gratitude for my amazing colleagues at Alta Journal and the talented (often award-winning) contributors we have the great fortune to publish. I've worked at a lot of publications and I've seen many pivots—to blogging, to video, to hot takes, to the recycling bin of history. Alta is different. This is a quarterly magazine and daily website dedicated to deeply reported stories written with style. We're committed to rigorous fact-checking and meticulous copy editing. Our creative director commissions lavish illustrations and gorgeous photography that pulls you into every page. Our editors smartly package the mix to edify and entertain, adding spikes of humor and whimsy. Every issue features cartoons, fiction, and poetry. Freakin' poetry. So, if you want to read a magazine made with intelligence, creativity, and humanity, I humbly suggest that you take advantage of our Black Friday deal to get Alta in print (and digital) and a collection of our best cartoons for 50% off. No one asked me to write this, I just know that if you take the leap on this deal, you'll read something you'll love in every issue and you may be thanking me next year when you renew: https://lnkd.in/gJw69mAy
