#CallingAllCaregivers! ALS United Mid-Atlantic is joining the #CuresCollective to highlight the important role of caregivers for National Family Caregivers Month. Join our ALS mission at www.alsmidatlantic.org Elizabeth shares this personal story about caring for her husband with ALS: "My husband Joe and I have been married for 48 blissful years. On June 14th 2022, the day of his diagnosis, it did not surprise me when he said “no tears, dear, no tears.” Joe’s the patriarch of our immediate and extended family. Joe set a high bar as I witnessed from our years together; his role as husband, father, son, and sibling always touched my heart. Until this past year, he did for others and always with a smile. He served as the family accountant, financial advisor and overall supporter for any needed help or advice. I consider my role as Joe’s caregiver a privilege. It is my time to give back to him. Although it is extremely difficult and sad to watch the ravages of this dreadful disease, I consider myself the lucky caregiver to such a wonderful man. Of course, I miss the Joe that once had such a strong presence as he entered a room; his voice is now weak and difficult to understand. His smile brings me joy yet many tears when I am alone. He is the positive force on our ALS journey and enlightens me on tough days. We pray together each night for the ALS community and when I cannot hold back the tears, he says to me as he did on June 14th 2022, 'no tears, dear, no tears.'" #ALS #ALSUnited

On Tuesday, November 18th, the US House of Representatives passed the Senator Elizabeth Dole 21st Century Veterans Healthcare and Benefits Improvement Act with an overwhelming 399-9 vote. For the ALS veteran community, this legislation represents a significant step forward in improving access to critical care and support services. The bill addresses several key areas that will directly impact veterans living with ALS: Streamlined access to VA healthcare services Expanded home care support options Enhanced caregiver support programs Improvements to long-term care services for disabled veterans Modernized VA service delivery systems This legislation passed because of outreach from passionate advocates from across the country.
