Milan Malpensa is setting a new standard in the aviation industry through its groundbreaking contributions to the #ALRIGH2T project, positioning hydrogen as a key energy source for the future of air travel. As part of SEA Milan Airports, which manages both Milan Malpensa and Milan Linate, the airport ranks among the top 10 airport operators in Europe for both cargo and passenger traffic. ?? What are they focusing on? At Malpensa, SEA will test direct liquid hydrogen refuelling, developing operational protocols to ensure safe and efficient refuelling operations. ?? The challenge Evaluating the performance of liquid hydrogen refuelling in terms of reliability, operability, boil-off, safety and cost. Development of the #SAG Basic Tank, now enhanced with integrated additional sensors. What were the key steps? ?? Performed material selection tests for sensor support components. ?? Completed preliminary CFD multiphase simulations to advance the digital twin of the refuelling system. ?? Defined the integration strategy to seamlessly connect different system models. ?? ?? Key achievements of #ALRIGH2T to date. We are making strides in aviation innovation with our new prototype pump, designed to refuel aircraft with subcooled LH2, now at an advanced stage! Progress Update: ?? Mechanical Design: Finalized and ready for action! ?? Dynamic Modeling: The LH2 loading and offloading process is currently in motion. ?? Collaboration: Our project team has successfully identified subsystems and conducted initial pump models, along with dynamic simulations of the connection line and receiving tank. #ALRIGH2TMilestones ?? | Over a year in and we’ve reached a key milestone: the Pre-analysis of Refuelling Technological Concepts. ?? What has this phase involved? ? Conducting a SWOT analysis to compare two refuelling approaches, identifying their strengths and limitations. The #ALRIGH2T team has also developed #LH2 demand models based on medium- and short-haul aircraft routes from Milan Malpensa and Paris airports. These models project future LH2 requirements up to 2035, laying the foundation for infrastructure planning. This is just the beginning! De Gennaro is leading groundbreaking research in Vienna to decarbonize aviation by moving away from petroleum-based fuels and exploring the potential of liquid hydrogen (LH?). The article highlights key challenges, including: ?? Storing Hydrogen (H?) safely and efficiently ?? Extreme Conditions for LH?, which must be kept at -253°C. ?? Technical Challenges in Aviation, from refueling to onboard storage. ? Despite the hurdles, De Gennaro is driven by the pursuit of innovation: "So much has not yet been researched in liquid hydrogen. In cryogenic technology, we are always waiting for surprises". ? The EU-funded #ALRIGH2T Project is paving the way for safe and efficient LH? refueling in future aviation. ?? New press release! #ALRIGH2T achieves major milestones in its first year! The consortium partners recently gathered in Vienna, Austria, for their General Assembly, where they shared key achievements: ? ?? Pre-analysis of refuelling technological concepts. ?? Prototype pump for aircraft refuelling with subcooled #LH2 is progressing, with mechanical design finalized and dynamic simulations underway. ?? Significant advances in the direct refuelling system, including the completion of the SAG Basic Tank design, sensor integration, and control system setup. The coupling strategy for integrating different system models has been defined, alongside the establishment of the core setup for the SAG test. ? ?? Next Steps: Discussions are now underway with ENAC - Ente Nazionale per l'Aviazione Civile for upcoming demonstrations at Milan Malpensa Airport. A “sandbox procedure” will soon be activated to define the testing sequence.
