Thank you to Dr. Edda Fields-Black for visiting with us yesterday to discuss the fascinating and multi-layered Combahee River Raid from the Civil War. It was a military success made possible by the leadership of Harriet Tubman, information gathered by formerly enslaved people, and bravery displayed by African American troops. And congratulations to Dr. Fields-Black on earning the Lincoln Prize from The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History for her book, "Combee: Harriet Tubman, the Combahee River Raid, and Black Freedom During the Civil War."

What careers would these remarkable women pursue today? ?? Would Kate Chase be a powerhouse in Public Relations? Could Adele Cutts Douglas have run for office? ? Behind every elegant gown in history stood a woman making bold moves—long before she even had the right to vote. ???? In the Blue Room, their stories take center stage because their dresses were stunning, but their legacies were even greater. ?? This #WomensHistoryMonth, let’s honor women who shaped history. #ALPLM #HerStory

Congratulations on your promotion Ulysses S. Grant! #OnThisDay (sorta kinda) in 1864, President Abraham Lincoln nominated Ulysses S. Grant for the rank of lieutenant general—a position that had only previously been held by George Washington. Yes, Winfield Scott also attained the title but by brevet only; he did not actually command with it. Lincoln made the nomination on February 29 (because 1864 was a leap year), but today’s close enough to mark the moment! #ALPLM #AbrahamLincoln #UlyssesSGrant #CivilWar
