It was a military success made possible by the leadership of Harriet Tubman, information gathered by formerly enslaved people, and bravery displayed by African American troops. And congratulations to Dr. Fields-Black on earning the Lincoln Prize from The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History for her book, "Combee: Harriet Tubman, the Combahee River Raid, and Black Freedom During the Civil War."

Congratulations on your promotion Ulysses S. Grant! #OnThisDay (sorta kinda) in 1864, President Abraham Lincoln nominated Ulysses S. Grant for the rank of lieutenant general—a position that had only previously been held by George Washington. Yes, Winfield Scott also attained the title but by brevet only; he did not actually command with it.
