Eight years ago, we began to explore a moonshot: plants as biofactories. Over hundreds of millions of years, plants have mastered the ability to transform sunlight, water, and soil into life-sustaining compounds. What if these extraordinary biological systems could become regenerative biofactories—not just creating what they already do, but producing a vast array of proteins that currently rely on carbon-intensive processes? Like any moonshot, the journey was far from easy. We tested over 1,000 strategies for protein accumulation, turning every setback into a breakthrough. That’s because healthy trees can cast their seeds into new locations and latitudes, shaking up the ecological map. Scientists call it “range migration,” and depending on the tree species, forests can migrate 10-15 km a year, often tracking Northwards, towards more habitable climates. That means trees are responding to climate change, even if humans aren’t.
