The January 29 mid-air collision between a military helicopter and PSA Airlines Flight 5342 near Washington National Airport tragically claimed 67 lives. Among those lost were two exceptional pilots: Capt. Jonathan J. Campos and F/O Samuel Walter Lilley. Taken too soon, they represented the best of aviation: passion, professionalism, and a deep commitment to the safety of others. Though their time in the skies was brief, their lives were defined by a shared love of flight, unwavering dedication, and profound devotion to family and friends. We applaud Representatives Nick Langworthy (R-NY) and Marc Veasey (D-TX) for reintroducing the Safer Skies Act, which would ensure that carriers operating under the less restrictive Federal Aviation Regulation (FAR) Part 135 and Part 380 public charter rules are held to the same security standards as every other scheduled passenger carrier in the United States. “Allowing Part 135/Part 380 operators to take advantage of less strict security protocols introduces risk into our aviation system, and we are grateful for Representatives Langworthy and Veasey for their leadership on this issue. Passengers deserve the same high level of aviation security regardless of their departure point and destination,” said Capt. Jason Ambrosi, ALPA president. The Safer Skies Act requires TSA to hold Part 135 and Part 380 air carriers that operate scheduled commercial service for passenger operations with more than nine seats to the same security standards as any other scheduled passenger carrier in the U.S. Concerningly, a number of Part 135 and Part 380 operators currently conduct scheduled flights to ticketed passengers with publicly available schedules to and from facilities that do not have the same level of passenger security screening as required for scheduled commercial airline operations under FAR Part 121. “By addressing the security threats created by the loophole, we close a dangerous precedent that would spark a race to the bottom and wholly undermine aviation security. The Safer Skies Act is one important step toward what our industry needs at this critical moment in history,” said Ambrosi.

At ALPA’s core are elected status representatives and local executive council officers chosen by their peers to take on the weighty responsibility of leading their fellow pilots. ? ? More than 90 of these representatives attended our recent, annual Leadership Training Conference to prepare for their role. Hands-on, interactive workshops focused on specialized topics that covered their responsibilities, explained the union’s governing body policies, and trained them to use union systems while allowing them the opportunity to network with fellow leaders. “If you remember one thing from your time here this week, know that you are not alone,” ALPA President Capt. Jason Ambrosi told the representatives. “You have the backing and resources of our great union. Use them.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/eMNBq69t?

As some of our members face uncertainty due in large part to the changing nature of our industry—whether it’s mergers, bankruptcies, forced downgrades and furloughs, or the first fatal U.S. passenger airline accident in 16 years, one thing remains certain—we’re stronger together.
