We recently hosted our very first Advanced Negotiations Training Seminar with 30 pilot volunteers from 13 pilot groups attending to further their training in the important arena of collective bargaining. They were joined by nearly 20 staff support members from various ALPA departments. Our President Capt. Jason Ambrosi welcomed pilots to the four-day event and focused on the importance of their work in their respective negotiating committees. “We’re always negotiating,” he proclaimed. “You’re always looking for improvements—negotiations are always happening and always essential.” Jeff Loesel, a manager in ALPA’s Representation Department and the moderator for the event, led pilots through a series of exercises designed to further their expertise and provide an opportunity to practice and hone important skills in multiple areas while receiving immediate feedback from experienced facilitators. “Negotiating is much more than what you do at the table,” he explained, with the exercises focusing on skills such as planning and communicating with your pilots (and your pilot leadership) in addition to a bargaining simulation that brought them from initial preparation through the end game. Additional presentations included a review of the elements necessary for a successful outcome and the importance of building trust and support within your pilot group as an essential element of a successful negotiation. Capt. Phil Otis (UAL), past chair of the Collective Bargaining Committee, highlighted the value of the Association as he told attendees, “Make connections with each other, especially when there are areas of common concern. Whatever you are going through, there are people within ALPA who just went through the same thing and can help.” #MondayMotivation #UnionStrong

Single-pilot operations aren’t some far-off fantasy. Airbus believes they will have an aircraft with single-pilot operational capabilities by 2027. They have customers, and they’re already working with regulators to allow it despite the safety concerns.?
