  • Fall Tree Planting: Fall is an ideal time to plant new trees and shrubs, thanks to cooler temperatures, increased rainfall, and warm soil that promotes root growth. By establishing roots during this season, young plants can be well-prepared to thrive in the spring. Before you begin planting, select a location that matches the specific needs of your tree or shrub. Consider factors like sunlight exposure, soil type, and available space for growth. Avoid placing large trees near structures or power lines, as they’ll need ample room to grow without obstruction. Matching the plant’s requirements with the site will help ensure a successful start. Here are a few trees to consider: Honey Locust (Gleditsia triacanthos) Known for its delicate, fern-like leaves that turn a golden yellow in the fall, it has a distinctive, open canopy, allowing dappled sunlight to reach the ground. Swamp White Oak (Quercus bicolor) It has unique leaves with a glossy upper surface and a fuzzy, lighter underside, adding to its visual appeal. Serviceberry (Amelanchier spp.) Serviceberry is a versatile small tree or shrub with clusters of white flowers in early spring and edible, blueberry-like fruits in summer. American Hornbeam (Carpinus caroliniana) Also called musclewood for its smooth, sinewy bark, the American hornbeam is a small, understory tree. It has a compact form and attractive foliage that ranges from green to orange-red in the fall. For expert advice on choosing and planting the right trees and shrubs for your property, or for assistance with fall planting, contact your local Almstead branch office. Our team is here to ensure your landscape looks beautiful and thrives season after season.

  • We've been facing unusually dry weather over the past couple of months, and it's taking a toll on our trees, plants, hedges, and perennials. While the fall season often brings cooler temperatures, this unusual dryness can have a significant impact on the health of your trees, shrubs, and lawn. Prolonged dry conditions can lead to weakened root systems, making trees more susceptible to pests and disease as well as increased risk of winter damage due to compromised health heading into the colder months. Your lawn is also feeling the effects of the dryness. Cool-season grasses, which dominate this region, typically experience a fall growth spurt, but without enough moisture, your lawn may show signs of brown or thinning patches and fail to properly establish before winter dormancy, impacting its ability to bounce back in the spring. What you can do Trees: Continue running your irrigation system or hand watering until we get consistent rainfall. Ideally, your plants should receive around two inches of water each week for proper hydration. In addition to watering, fall is the perfect time to give your plants an extra boost with fertilization and bio-stimulants. A fall fertilizer can strengthen roots and prepare plants for winter, while bio-stimulants improve soil health, boost nutrient absorption, and enhance drought resistance. Mulching around the base of trees and shrubs helps retain moisture and regulate soil temperature. Lawn: Water your lawn early in the morning for about 20 minutes, 2-3 times a week if possible, to maintain moisture levels in the soil. If you have recently overseeded or fertilized, it's especially important to keep up with watering to ensure that the seeds take root and fertilizer is effective. Almstead is committed to keeping your landscape healthy. Our landscapes bring beauty and peace to our lives, and now is the time to return the favor. If you’d like to schedule a visit or have any questions about how to care for your trees, shrubs, and lawn during these dry conditions, please don’t hesitate to contact you local Almstead branch office.

  • Here's a quick video of our expert tree removal process. Using an aerial lift, we safely accessed the tree, and with precision rigging, we carefully lowered each branch down. Our team efficiently cleared the debris with the help of the Branch Manager, feeding it into the wood-chipper for a fast, seamless, and safe operation from start to finish. #branchmanager #treeremoval #arborist #aeriallift

  • Our Stamford Branch team was in Bethel, CT today, expertly removing three large, mature trees. With storm season approaching, the property owner was concerned about the safety of nearby people and structures. Using our aerial lift, we safely accessed the trees, and with the help of our Branch Manager, efficiently moved the debris to the wood chipper, ensuring a smooth and safe process. • A Beautiful Lawn Next Year Starts with Our Fall Services Fall tends to be overlooked in the cycle of lawn care, but a touch of attention during this season can lay the foundation for a lush lawn come spring. If you haven’t signed up for our Fall Lawn Care Services, please contact your local Almstead Branch Office right away as time is of the essence.   Soil Testing & Fertilization The best first move towards nurturing a healthy lawn is a soil test. This can range from straightforward pH and fertility examinations to more intricate evaluations of organic matter and living organisms beneath the surface.   Overseeding & Core Aeration Fall is the optimal time to think about overseeding, a process that enhances your lawn's quality for future seasons. By mixing the appropriate seed blend for your specific site and adding it to the existing turf, you can mend bare spots, intensify the color and thickness of the grass, and render it more resistant to diseases. Compacted soil, often a result of heavy foot traffic or regular maintenance like mowing, can be another barrier to a splendid lawn. It hampers root development, leading to subpar turf. Core aeration, often performed alongside overseeding, can alleviate this issue by creating small openings in the soil, permitting air, water, and nutrients to reach the grass roots.   Topdressing Topdressing, or adding a mixture of top-notch organic compost and sand before seeding, further enriches the soil, providing the seeds with a solid footing and the nutrients they need to flourish.   The formula for a beautiful lawn is straightforward: supply the grass with what it requires and when it requires it. This encompasses maintaining appropriate soil conditions, ensuring sufficient moisture, employing good mowing techniques, and managing both broad-leaf and grassy weeds.
