This past weekend I spoke at Southern California Linux Expo about open source organizations. During that talk, I listed the AlmaLinux OS Foundation next to the Rust Foundation and the GNOME Foundation, and then made a joke. "I would be remiss if I didn't put us there, but honestly putting us adjacent to these two is HILARIOUS." After the talk, my buddy Tarus stopped by the booth and opened his wallet. "Hey - I want to buy one of these pins from you." I prepped my normal answer for folks - "Oh! They're free! You're fine to just take it-" He stopped me. "No, listen. When you made the joke about putting AlmaLinux on that list, I did a thing I like to do - I pulled up the [tax filings] for all three of them. And let me just say - I very much want to give you this. What you all are doing is incredibly important, and I now have a new definition of comically underfunded." That gesture has sat with me all week, like a little hug for my open source soul. One that I didn't know I so sorely needed. The "open source needs more funding" drumbeat is so common that we as an industry all get a little numb to it, but that doesn't stop it from being very true. Not every project has millions of dollars (even though many of the ones that do still qualify as underfunded for me), and your little bit of a boost (whether monetary, boosting on social media, sharing your love of a project, or in any other way) often helps more than just paying for the production machine - sometimes it is a tangible form of hope.
