Ms. Joy, the elementary music teacher at Alma's Ottiwell Campus, has been working with scholars on a special project to recognize Native American Heritage Month. "Each culture has close roots with their own creation music, and I wanted to recognize that close tie!" Ms. Joy says. "It is important for scholars to be exposed to music from different cultures in order to appreciate their differences and connections with others. All indigenous peoples have their own music style, but something that unites these tribes from around the world is a love of nature."

Alma del Mar is a K-8 public charter school network whose mission is to put every one of our scholars on the path to college and to challenge them to be service-minded leaders. We do this by immersing our scholars in a highly demanding, highly supportive environment where they receive a content–rich education. We’re located in New Bedford, a beautiful coastal city known for its history as the heart of the whaling industry and as a central hub of the abolitionist movement. This once prosperous city is now home to one of the lowest performing districts in Massachusetts. The majority of New Bedford’s public schools are among the lowest performing 20% of schools in the state. Alma gets results for kids. After fewer than three years at Alma, our scholars outperform their district peers in reading ability and surpass their suburban peers in mathematics achievement. In addition, we’re known for being a highly inclusive school. Over 30% of scholars at Alma receive some additional academic or behavioral support. We have been nationally recognized for our effectiveness in serving our growing population of English language learners.

Back in 2020 and 2021, while our scholars and staff sat in virtual classrooms, the Alma community also more than doubled in size. Now, since the pandemic ended, we have all eagerly sought the path to “return to normal.” But at Alma, we committed to re-envisioning how families can be involved in their child’s education. At the same time, one of our long-term goals as a school is to ensure our staff reflect the community we serve in New Bedford. Last spring, Alma was selected by the ELEMENTARY AND SECONDARY EDUCATION, MASSACHUSETTS DEPARTMENT OF (DESE) for a pilot initiative to increase family engagement efforts. This initiative, called La Respuesta (Spanish for “The Answer”), helped us create a pathway to accomplish both goals: The grant allowed us to hire multiple family members of Alma scholars to work as aides at our school. We were able to truly foster a school culture that reflects and embraces our diverse New Bedford community. We are so grateful for the 700+ hours worked by our La Respuesta team members last spring. Although the grant has ended, we are proud that one member continues to work on a per diem basis in our cafeteria, and another just was hired full-time as a fellow in a kindergarten classroom!
