I used to think that to write a killer UX case study, I need to talk about everything. But I was wrong ? I remember trying to include every single thing I did in a project, showing all the artefacts I created. My UX case study became so cluttered that even I couldn’t read it again. The problem? ???Wrong focus ?? The solution? ???Quality > Quantity ?? This is how I approach writing UX case study stories today ?? 1???Start from the summary ? Because hiring managers are busy people at work, they won’t read everything. You need to optimise for time to value. Communicate the key things first to increase their engagement. Check out Minto Pyramid framework or BLUF communication method to know more. 2???Select project moments ? Because you don’t want to overwhelm your readers so you need to prioritise. Pick key, the most interesting, relevant, impactful project moments: when you learned, when you made a change, when you tackled a problem etc. 3???Include problem, change, retrospective ? Because your job is about making a change so talk about it. The easiest way for me to explain it is to start with the problem. Then, I go through the changes by showing the exploration and solution. Finally, I end with a project retrospective, sharing the impact, results, and my reflections. 4???Talk about your impact ? Because what matters the most is what value you can deliver. Show your impact by highlighting product metrics, areas you impacted, quotes from positive user feedback. Tell stories about the impact that your design work has produced. Frame your design work as enabler of business goals and user needs. And include insights about the impact you’ve produced —?on business goals, processes, team culture, planning, estimates, testing. Also, be very clear about the position that you are applying for. In many companies, titles do matter. There are vast differences in responsibilities and salaries between various levels for designers, so if you see yourself as a senior, review if it actually reflects itself in the position. And: interviewers closer to the business side will expect you to present examples of your work using the STAR method (Situation – Task – Action – Result), and might be utterly confused if you delve into all the fine details of your ideation process or the choice of UX methods you’ve used. ??? Situation:?Set the scene and give necessary details. ??♀? Task:?Explain your responsibilities in that situation. ?? Action:?Explain what steps you took to address it. ?? Result:?Share the outcomes your actions achieved. As Meghan suggests, the interview is all about how your skills add value to the problem the company is currently solving. So ask about the current problems and tasks. Interview the person who interviews you, too — but also explain who you are, your focus areas, your passion points and how you and your expertise would fit in a product and in the organization. Especially in times of AI-generated content, hallucinations, deceptive patterns, exaggeration and automation everywhere, we need to build trust by building honest, sincere and kind relationships with our customers. Sometimes it means showing your vulnerabilities. Having typos. Having an opinion. Explaining to customers how things actually are, without pre-written templates and AI-generated drafts. Sending a friendly “thank you”-note that has nothing to do with your marketing or sales efforts. People aren’t perfect. And I’d love to see more products being a bit less pixel-perfect and more humane instead. That’s a first step towards building trust when it’s so eroded, so scarce, so neglected — yet so much needed and valued and appreciated. #ux #designpatterns
