关于我们

As the leadership organization for the arts in St. Joseph, the Council fulfills its mission of bringing arts and people together by fostering coordinated cultural planning, promoting artistic opportunities, offering marketing, advocacy, and financial support to its fourteen member agencies, providing arts education programs, and robust public art initiatives. Founded in 1963, the Council is the City of St. Joseph’s official community arts agency (designated in 1990 and reaffirmed in 2021) and is acknowledged statewide as an arts leader. The Council is managed by a professional staff of four and 32 members of the board of directors, and our programs utilize over 250 volunteers each year. The Council serves our member agencies by offering grant reviews, cooperative marketing, and advocating for local, state, and national arts funding. It provides our member agencies with board development workshops. Annually the Council conducts the Arts Fund Campaign raising funds to support the work of member agencies that apply for funding. Its services to the community include bi-monthly emails, quarterly newsletters, and an online arts calendar promoting arts events. The Council promotes the arts through mainstream media, streaming services, and digital and social media platforms. It works with the City of St. Joseph and the Downtown Community Improvement District to develop creative placemaking through the St. Joseph Sculpture Walk and the Traffic Box art projects. The Allied Arts Council aids in developing professional arts through its arts education programming, developing future artists and arts patrons. Artists in the Schools brings students and area artists together, reaching over 1,750 students annually and After-School Art-Ventures serve students in Title I schools. Poetry Out Loud and Kennedy Center Partners in Education are national programs in which the Council partners with the St. Joseph School District and the Missouri Arts Council.

  • May is national preservation month, celebrating historical preservation throughout the US in some form since 1973. This year St. Joseph has something extra special to celebrate. The Missouri Theater and Theater Building was honored a couple weeks ago with the 2024 McReynolds Award for Historic Preservation by Missouri Preservation. Congratulations to our almost 100 year old gem of a theater and to all who have worked tirelessly to make so many improvements while honoring the past! #artventures #MissouriTheater #StJoMoarts #getdowntown Saint Joseph, Buchanan County The Missouri Theater in Saint Joseph, Missouri opened in June of 1927 as a 1,200-seat movie house. In 1978, the City of Saint Joseph purchased the building and sought National Register designation as part of the plan to convert it to a performing arts center. In the last decade, the City of Saint Joseph’s Parks, Recreation & Civic Facilities Department started to invest in the infrastructure of the historic building. The upgrades designed to meet ADA requirements included the installation of a looped-assisted listening system, additional ADA seating areas, and accessible restrooms on the first floor. In 2019, the entire tile and brick façade was removed to allow for repairs of the primary wall. The historic material was then reinstalled. The City replaced the entire roof to stop the water infiltration which had damaged the interior. Careful restoration of the interior included the intricate details on the walls and ceilings. The installation of new lighting and a new curtain highlight the transformation. Work on the marquee will continue into 2024 with the restoration of the signage. Voters also approved funding for the installation of historically appropriate seating and the renovations of the office and retail space attached to the theater. With the ongoing restoration and plans for future improvements, the City of Saint Joseph is ensuring this historic landmark will continue to contribute to the community for coming generations.
