As we navigate challenging times, the necessity for sustainable funding for the arts has never been clearer. The recent veto of $32 million in arts funding by Gov. DeSantis has dealt a significant blow to countless organizations, including ours at the Alliance for the Arts. Why is sustainable funding essential? 1?? Economic Impact: In 2022, the arts contributed $135.3 million to the economy of Lee County, supported over 2,500 jobs, and generated $23.4 million in state and local tax revenue. 2?? Community Enrichment: The arts foster creativity, provide educational opportunities, and enhance the quality of life for all community members. 3?? Inclusivity: We strive to make the arts accessible to everyone, regardless of financial situation, and maintain a welcoming space for all. This week I had the pleasure of discussing the veto of all arts funding with WGCU's John Davis, Elysia Dawn, Executive Director of United Arts Collier and Tom Hall, Public Art Consultant for the City of Fort Myers and fellow contributor to WGCU. Don't miss out on the final film in the Southern Circuit Tour of Independent Filmmakers- @1946themovie next Wednesday, May 8, at 6 PM. This film chronicles researchers as they trace the origins of the anti-gay movement among Christians. Researchers believe that the ancient Greek words used in the 1946 version of the Bible were originally meant to mean abusive, predatory behavior rather than homosexuality.
